The right-wing, mostly evangelical Council for National Policy (CNP)—which plans to “restore religious & economic freedom...under the constitution”—is alive & well, toasting Kavanaugh’s success w/ beer & hosting a boastful & not-so-moderate @nikkihaley. 1/…
When I first learned about the CNP from @amandablount2, I was so horrified that I began researching and writing about it on Twitter & eventually transferred it all to this Medium article. It’s had over 62k views & 4.7k reads so far. Pls give it a look.… 3/
The CNP has had long-term goals since its inception and appears on the cusp of reaching them by 2020, its stated deadline. It’s more organized than anything on the left and many of its members list “campaign election technology” as an interest (think Cambridge Analytica). 4/
As discussed in my sourced article, the CNP also has ties to @ESSVote in that one of the CNP’s founders substantially funded BRC, which merged with DataMark/AIS (which was substantially funded by the family of another early prominent member) to form ES&S. 5/
Another CNP founding father (Paul Weyrich), who @KarlRove courted shamelessly during the Bush years, gave an infamous speech proclaiming that he didn’t want everybody to vote bc the Religious Right’s “leverage goes up as the voting populace goes down”: 5/
Karl Rove is largely to blame for empowering the radical Religious Right, which is why I often post this quote that I found in a book about the Rove/Bush years. 6/
By the way, as discussed in my sourced article, CNP founder Paul Weyrich (who also founded the Moral Majority and Heritage Foundation) was one of the earliest proponents of a Constitutional Convention. 7/
The Religious Right and “economic freedom” Koch brothers have joined forces in the push for a Constitutional Convention to re-write the US Constitution. They have made alarming progress. 8/
STATE legislatures decide whether to call a Constitutional Convention to amend the US Constitution, another reason STATE races cannot be ignored. Wisconsin, which installled CELLULAR MODEMS in its @ESSVote tabulators in 2015, joined the call in 2017.… 9/
Meanwhile, since 2014, @ESSVote has donated more than 30k to @RSLC whose mission is to elect REPUBLICANS to STATE office. 10/
And after initial denials that it had used remote access at all, @ESSVote finally admitted that it has installed remote access in 300 jurisdictions, but won’t say where. 11/
I have tried to get this information via social media pressure and hoped that someone like @JoyAnnReid, @Lawrence, or @maddow would notice and take up the issue. So far, no luck. 12/
Because Republicans have control of the Senate and this of the Senate rules Committee, we are at the mercy of Republican chairman @RoyBlunt when it comes to investigating @ESSVote. Naturally, he hasn’t lifted a finger. 12/
When negotiating @amyklobuchar’s already-much-too-lax election security bill, @royblunt issued a “markup” that would allow post-election audits to be manual OR DIGITAL, knowing full well that digital audits can’t detect digital vote tally manipulation.… 13/
The Secure Elections Act was much too lax already bc it already did not require Risk Limiting Audits & would allow states to continue forcing voters to use touchscreen voting machines & touchscreen barcode ballot markers, which undermine manual audits (among other problems). 14/
19/ @ESSVote, which donated money to help elect R’s to state office (where the decision whether to hold a Constitutional Convention is made) wants Congress to approve an election security budget (w/o strings) & confirm Trumps’s horrid picks to the EAC.
20/ All of this harmonizes disturbingly with the GOP’s long and disturbing history of blocking legislation that would put restrictions on their beloved touchscreens, which should be banned outright.
21/ Yes, Congress has the power to ban them outright.
22/ But Republicans like @briankempga in Georgia just love their touchscreens. Can’t imagine why...
25/ Even when we manage to get hand marked paper ballots and scanners (touchscreens for ADA only), @ESSVote and Dominion Voting stick cellular modems in them.
26/ And the states refuse to pass laws requiring manual audits.
27/ Even when they finally agree to manual audits, they make sure the audits are a dog-and-pony-show that can be gamed.
28/ Enough is enough. No more terrible compromises forced down our throats by a Republican Party that has been plotting for decades to re-write our US Constitution to the liking of the Religious Right and Koch Brothers.
31/ @ronwyden’s #PAVEAct is much better than @amyklobuchar’s Secure Elections Act bc it would require states to give voters the option to hand mark their ballots (no touchscreen) & to conduct Risk Limiting Audits.
As for the midterms, although our touchscreens (& lack of meaningful manual Audit laws) prevent us from addressing all potential attack vectors, we are NOT helpless and must wake up to the many things we CAN still do to address some of them in Nov. 32/
The thing is, we must do these things OURSELVES. No one is coming to save us. There is no organization leading the charge on most of these protocols. We must implement them ourselves or prepare for the consequences, whatever they may be. 33/
I will continue making efforts as to these protocols, but frankly, I’m not that good at the types of logistical details that a large scale effort requires. So if u have those skills, pls step up. TY. #StrongerTogether #ProtectOurVotes 34/
@IndivisibleMem has it right. We need boots on the ground micromanaging & recording everything in states w/ a history of voter suppression (which usually goes hand in hand w/ voting machine shenanigans - cellular modems, paperless touchscreens, etc) 35/
