1. The Trump admin’s decision to put the Jerusalem consulate under the authority of the embassy in Tel Aviv is the clearest signal yet they have zero interest in a two-state solution. Practically speaking it sets American diplomacy up to treat Israel/Palestine as one state
2. For years the Jerusalem consulate has reported directly to Washington and acted as the default embassy engaging with the Palestinian Authority
3. If you believe in a two-state solution and want a diplomatic facilities and representation that engages with both sides this makes sense.
4. And if you want information from the field that actually represented and explains the views of both sides, you need this
5. When I worked in the envoy office there would be an incident and we’d get 2 reports. One from the embassy with the Israeli perspective & one from the consulate with the Palestinian view. We would have to figure out how to understand these two views and respond
6. But that won’t happen now. Instead the Us Ambassador to Israel (who in this case also happens to support settlements) gets to be the arbiter of what Washington hears. Even if it wasn’t Friedman this would be a huge problem.
7. Cutting UNRWA, moving the embassy & all the other steps show that the Trump team is taking a heavily pro-Israeli position. But this shows something worse. They genuinely do no want and are not organizing themselves for a two-state solution
8. And the message to the Palestinians is clear. “You don’t get your own American representative because we are not going to treat you as though you deserve or will have a state.”
