A reminder as I am reading my thesis, denying & silencing racism are acts of violence. They increase distress in the target & likely increase risks of racial trauma.
The best response when someone is in distress over racial violence is to believe them. And offer support. And if you cannot bring yourself *to* believing them this is likely about you...but anyway, at least validate...
And if you struggle with validating their experience (some of you will bc...whiteness) at least validate their distress. Then go read on anti-racism.
My study suggests together with other evidence those who are doubted & silenced upon sharing their experience...show significantly more distress after racist incidents. And that is a surprise. To no one.
And final point worth re-stating, to those who think, but how can I be sure? Those ones.
You cannot. This is the point...
Nonetheless, I’d like to think that 1) If someone approaches you bleeding and says they have been attacked by a pitbull, you will show compassion & assistance before making sure it was indeed a pit rather than a Doberman & that they are not mistaken.
2) That absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Thus you cannot tell for sure there was no racism EITHER. So why assume there was no racism when someone is distressed, if not white privilege, and a fundamental lack of compassion?
So you see how all roads lead us back to power (& epistemology). Don’t increase psychological risks to POC simply bc you’re not willing to give up living in the fantasy of a fair & just world.
POC are often accused of jumping to conclusion...but really, as I have said before...Denying racism when a situation is ambiguous (to you) or *beyond* the scope of your grasp is indeed jumping to conclusion to maintain your psychic equilibrium.
You cannot have it both ways ☺️
Sorry.
I don’t see racism = There is no racism = white fallacy.

Also #Throwback from my Ted talk:

‘You cannot see what you are unwilling to see, you cannot see what you have been programmed not to see and...not every phenomenon that is in existence can be seen’
