(1) Swedish public broadcaster, SVT, does story on how employees at Swedish pharmacies are met with racism and Islamophobia from customers on a regular basis. Often, white co-workers just watch, saying nothing. Some examples of what has been said to the employees:
(2) "One day a male customer asked if something had 'happened' in the pharmacy. When I asked what he meant, he repeated the question: 'Did something happen here? There are only dark people working here. There are just black-haired people and two with veils'."
(3) "Another time a veiled colleague was taking prescriptions. When a male customer was called up, he came up to her and said, 'I don't want help from someone like you'. This was the first time she had been spoken to like this, and went to the staff room and cried."
(4) "One day, one of our regular customers went up to a colleague and said in a loud voice, 'I don't like Muslims'."
(5) "One customer said, 'I don't want help from some (n-word).' None of my colleagues said anything."
(6) I get comments like 'Shouldn't you adapt to our country?' and "Your clothes don't fit in our society' a few times a week. But, I'm educated and work. How much more should I adapt? Even if I take off my veil, I am still black. I can't take off my skin color."
(7) "My colleagues don't say much. It's understood that I simply can't help certain customers, and that others have to do it. It would have been better if they had backed me up and told the customers that they need to go to another pharmacy."
(8) "In some areas (of town) where I work, something unpleasant happens every day. I let a lot of the incidents go, but it takes its toll. I have an easier time (in parts of town) where I can just fit in with my veil and skin color."

(10) Apart form blatant and upsetting racism in this thread, consider the last quote: about how it's easier for some with immigrant backgrounds to work in areas with other immigrants, rather than in predominantly white communities where they suffer racist and Islamophobic abuse.
(11) In the run-up to the Swedish elections, we heard SO much from foreign journalists about problems with "integration"...which is an easy story if you are too lazy to actually research what it's like to live and work while facing discrimination. Integration is a TWO-way street.
(12) This is also a major problem in Swedish journalism, which has largely failed to grapple with issue of the everyday racism faced by immigrants in Sweden, and how "cultures of exclusion" that are usually blamed almost exclusively on immigrants are also fueled by the majority.
