THREAD: @chicagovotes Twitter Town Hall!

I’m happy to support @ChicagoVotes, an organization that works to increase voter turnout of young people in Chicago.

Today I’ll answer your questions about voting and civics in this thread.
1/ Q from @casijesse: From your perspective, can you describe the state of democracy in the US today?
2/ A: Some of the pillars of our democratic system are under attack. States have engaged in voter suppression efforts, there is a war on the free press, and Congress isn’t doing its job. That’s why we need more people to vote. Non-voters outnumbered Trump voters in 2016.
3/ Q from @StevieValles: How do you think we can engage young people into the electoral process?
4/ We need to reach young people where they’re at (like social media) and show them their vote matters by engaging them and giving them something to vote for.

They vote at a lower rate partly because they think their vote doesn’t count. It doesn’t count because they don’t vote!
5/ Q from @TheRealJEB11: What is the importance of the midterm elections?
6/ A: This election is extremely important. Congress has not checked Donald Trump’s abuses of power. If Republicans retain control of both houses of Congress, there will continue to be no check on Trump and the election will be a green light for him to continue.
7/ Q from @littlejackie66: What can we do to overcome VOTER INTIMIDATION? We're living in a state of fear these days. This just isn't right. What can leaders do?
8/ A: Contact the Election Protection Hotline (866-OUR-VOTE), the Department of Justice Voting Rights Hotline (800-253-3931), or an attorney if you believe your rights have been violated.

You should also elect state Attorneys General who will safeguard your right to vote.
9/ Q from @Rudy_Garrett09: Do you think the cross check program has had an effect on the number of registered voters here in Chicago? Is Illinois still in the cross-check program?
10/ Governor Rauner vetoed legislation that would have removed IL from the Crosscheck program, which was spearheaded by activists from @IndivisibleChi.

I don’t think Crosscheck has reduced IL voting rolls, but it has been used by other states to do so. We shouldn’t support that.
11/ Q from @AlecBaumrind: How do we get marijuana legalized in Chicago, that is in tandem with the release of folx incarcerated for marijuana related non-violent charges?
12/ A: @JBPritzker supports legalization of marijuana, and if he becomes Governor, I expect that will happen.

The most effective way to release individuals who are currently incarcerated for non-violent marijuana offenses is by the Governor using pardons and commutations.
13/ Q from @chiefsaveahoe: Where does voting fit within the #MeToo movement?
14/ A: Our votes can elect representatives who enact laws that empower and protect women who are victimized. We also can elect women who can bring their experience to office, and representatives who believe women and seriously investigate their allegations.
15/ Thank you for all your questions! I’ll try to answer more questions at the #OnTopic taping tomorrow.
