I don’t know how many different ways I can say “This is bad and we really need help here,” but... this is bad and we really need help here. 😪 theguardian.com/world/2018/oct…
Couldn’t go like 12 hours on this story before anyone at a major media outlet seemed to entirely forget about this...
NYT seems to have his its limit of 1 op-ed about trans people written by the same trans person they publish all the time. WaPo reached out to me asking me to write an op-ed, but then things after I sent them a handful of ideas just sort of responded like I was cold-pitching them.
The bomb story is important. Obviously. But if you’re not also devoting a pretty significant chunk of time to the rapid fire rate the Trump admin is gutting trans protections, you’re being irresponsible.
Swap any other group of U.S. citizens into all of these headlines (most are *different* things they already did) and it’s pretty obvious how over the top they’re being.
And honestly, if after seeing all of this, you’re one of the people who’s like “Well, obviously I don’t personally believe in this specific thing,” but vote for him anyway, you’re just... really crappy. I don’t even know what to say anymore.
This is a story from a few months ago. People have been brushing it off like “oh, well, it’s probably just a few glitches” because the State Dept. said there hadn’t been a change of policy. Yet. them.us/story/trans-wo…
But then the State Dept changed the gender marker website a couple months later... but then changed it back when people noticed. transequality.org/press/releases…
I feel like it’s less likely that these are all just a string of weird coincidences and more — as many actions the administration has taken would suggest — that a few people just accidentally rolled that out too early.
One thing that sucks about this issue is that there’s that thin line between getting people’s attention to discuss the very, very real dangers being presented here... and people being like “ugh, look at this identity-politics obsessed SJW” and completely tuning out.
And I really try not to be the person yelling on a street corner that the world is ending — but this stuff needs more attention if there’s my hope of stopping it before it’s too late
But so few people in power or with influence care.

What do I think the end goal here is? Luckily, I don’t have to speculate because that info is already public. The Family Research Council put out a 5-point public policy action plan against trans people.
The FRC plan is (their answer to all these policy questions is “no,” BTW) this. Trump addressed point 5 l, the NYT report from Sunday is 4, 3 would be explicitly excluding transition-related care in ACA Marketplace plans, 2 is related to 4, and 1 would be a national HB2 style law
But the head of the organization, Tony Perkins, is constantly on network and cable news for friendly interviews like it’s no big deal. Both CNN and Fox have had him on multiple times in the past year.
Also, check out the similarities between FRC’s conclusion in that document with the leaked Trump memo.
And if point 1 on their list (even allowing state and local lawmakers implement protections for trans people) sounds far fetched, it’s already in the works — and might not even require getting a bill through Congress. I wrote about that in a recent thread.
But because certain anti-trans voices (who pretend to be allies) have tried to push the idea that trans people can’t write about trans issues in an honest and objective way, the best I can hope for is for someone at one of the news outlets that steer clear of giving trans people
more than just a token voice from time to time, will at least see this thread and be better informed for when they get asked to write about it.
The fact that the administration is following this org’s how-to guide to permanently marginalizing a single group should be enough for people to care.

But if that’s not, maybe this is: they won’t stop with just trans people.
A lot of this (but better organized), was in the op-ed I ended up pitching to the Washington Post. Too bad they declined.
Oh, I get it. Because this guy thinks I’m s man. Cool cool.
The tl;dr
