I'm crying.

I'm listening to @NPR's @MorningEdition report on the internment of #MatthewShepard's ashes.

I'm recalling the candlelight vigil I attended with friends.
The emotional interview I did with Judy Shepard.
The shocking brutality of the killing.
@NPR @MorningEdition I'm thinking of other #LGBT hate crime killings I covered that weren't national headlines.

#SakiaGunn was two weeks shy of her 16th birthday when a man called her a d*ke and when she talked back, stabbed her. She died in the lap of her cousin.

@NPR @MorningEdition #GwenAraujo was a teenager when she was raped and murdered.

#BrandonTeena was in their 20s when they were raped and murdered.

Two young trans/GNC people just trying to live their authentic lives. But men wanted them to follow their birth genitalia instead.

Like Trump.
@NPR @MorningEdition #BritneyCosby and #CrystalJackson were so in love. Everyone saw it and said it. I have a photo of them hugging each other from the story I did on their murders to remind me that justice reporting is part of why I am working on my current book.

They were overkilled.
Crystal was shot in the head.
Britney was tortured to death.
Their honor killing was at the hands of Britney's father, who thought he was being disrespected by his daughter's lesbianism & her out, proud life.
He drove their bodies to a dumpster. His own daughter. Like garbage.
#MollyOlgin and #KristeneMaryChapa were just a couple of teenagers in love when they were stalked to a park one evening, sexually assaulted & shot in the head. Molly died, Kristene survived, but paralyzed. I reported their story & raised $20k for assistive devices for Chapa.

I've also written about the #correctiverape of lesbians--another hate crime. Sometimes the women survive. Most often they do not. The assaults are incalculably violent.

One young woman had her intestines pulled out through her vagina.

A renowned athlete was stoned to death.
As we remember the horrific killing of #MatthewShepard, I'm telling you there are many #LGBT victims whose parents were not diplomats, who weren't wealthy, who didn't get vigils.
#MatthewShepard deserves every memorial. This nation needs to be held to account for these murders.
Last November--not an election year--the Trump DOJ disallowed the federal anti-discrimination lawsuits of several lesbians who lost their jobs because they were gay. AG Sessions decided that these women--or other lesbians or gay men--could no longer use Title IX to file suits.
This year--just before #Midterms--we have the leaked memo of the proposed erasure of trans people by Trump's HHS.

The war on #LGBT people often starts in their own homes and/or is supported by an often violently anti-LGBT society.

It makes it hard to live our lives.

So my #FridayFlashback is of Judy Shepard, who loved her son so deeply. She has fought for 20yrs to keep his memory alive, to remind us of the toll hate takes on a family, on a society.

This week suggests we have much more work ahead.

And that the killings are not over.
