I'm not even surprised waking up to a white supremacist shooting up a synagogue. We have a president that keeps talking about "globalists" and Soros like a typical Reddit antisemite. A guy tried to copycat Dylan Roof in Kentucky this week. Totally normal country. #Pittsburgh
Trump isn't alone in this. We have many prominent GOP members who have embraced this exact kind of thinly-veiled antisemitism. What these people say to the public matters. They're emboldening hate crimes every fucking day.
Y'know @hughhewitt, this is why yelling at a Senator whose entire existence has been focused on fucking over poorer people to the benefit of ultra rich conservative men is *entirely* different than the shit that Trump & his ilk does. Do you fucking understand that now?
What is it going to take for people like @hughhewitt and @benshapiro and every other supposed "intellectual" to finally admit that unstable people who worship a hate-spewing president leads to *genuine* tragedy at an increasing rate. Not just an inconvenient dinner. #Pittsburgh
The Trump GOP are not only emboldening white supremacists in words; it's in policy, too. He cut funding to national programs fighting Neo-Nazis just last year.
The @GOP as an institution have been in the business of sneakily relying on right-wing extremists to support their movement for years now. They're just being more overt about their support now. It has consequences they must accept.
We live in a country where a shameless white supremacist like @SteveKingIA is *Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Constitution & Civil Justice*. He's on the Subcommittee on Immigration & Border Security. White supremacist views actively shaping American policy. This is shitty.
This is @SteveKingIA, a man who is not denounced by Trump's GOP, & is in fact a leader. He's met privately w/ Trump. You tell me if this kind of rhetoric doesn't encourage people to yell things about Jewish genocide after a terror attack. #Pittsburgh
I'm furious, and I'm deeply sad. Sad for the loss of life, sad for the increasing hate, sad for the fact that societies around the world are blowing past every billboard with historical examples of how this ends without even looking up. It's all so predictable. /end
Okay, I forgot a few things in my sleep-addled state. Combine these two acts with the #MAGABomber, and you have: anti-Black, anti-semite, anti-Muslim. All you're missing for GOP bingo is anti-Latinx, but I'm willing to wager what all 3 feel about the Latinx community.
Trump is planning an immigration speech very soon. Can you guess what kind of tone it will take? Can you guess what kind of people will be cheering for it? Anti-immigration is a staple of white supremacy bc of their fear of "losing the country". washingtonpost.com/world/national…
The thing that can't be lost in all of these terror attacks (use the right term, media) is that the people committing them genuinely believe they're doing the *right thing*. They're doing what, in their heart, they believe is best for America. Trump's GOP agrees. #Pittsburgh
You have the conservative media, you have your favorite bloggers, you have the GOP as a platform telling you that you're facing an existential threat. That the country you've been taught to love & worship is "under attack". How do you expect unstable people to react? #Pittsburgh
*This* is why the "both sides" rhetoric is a failure, folks. *This* is why the constant whataboutism obfuscates the point. "One side" is worried about a historically parallel rise of fascism & bigotry. The "other side" worries that white won't be the majority. These aren't equal.
Do we need a mass murder against a Latinx community to acknowledge the effects of this violent rhetoric on them? Do we need *another* mass murder of a LGBT community to see the effects on them? We already have a rise in murders of trans people. What are we waiting for?
To Jewish, Muslim, Black, Asian, Queer, Latinx, & every other community that has been targeted by right-wing threats: I can't imagine what it feels like to be in your shoes, but I see you, and I hear you, and you're not alone. #Pittsburgh
