I watched “The Resistance Banker” last night, the acclaimed Dutch film about the banker who financed the Dutch resistance during World War II. My parents emigrated from Holland to the United States after the war to escape a continent torn apart by an anti-Semitic ideology... 1/8
My mother’s father had a key position in the Dutch central bank but was fired when the Nazis seized control. He had married my grandmother, who was Jewish, despite his parents’ protests. She was forced to wear the Jewish star and most of her family perished in the Holocaust…2/8
My grandmother three times was rounded up for concentration camps but my grandfather’s quick thinking and ingenuity saved her. My mother, a teenager, was forced by Germans to watch resistance fighters being shot by a firing squad; a similar scene is in the movie…3/8
My father’s father ran the Dutch steel company and was placed in a concentration camp because he refused to cooperate with the Nazis. When soldiers came to take my teenage father to Germany for forced conscription, he escaped by leaping from a second floor window….4/8
The distraction was necessary because my aunt and uncle were hiding Jewish children in the house. For their work during the war, Israel has recognized them as "Righteous Among The Nations." ….5/8
These are all small acts compared to the extraordinary work of Walraven van Hall, the hero of the movie. But my parents’ experiences shows how every person can find the strength in themselves to counter intolerance and hate…6/8
Before my mother passed away three years ago, she was increasingly worried about the growing racial and religious divisions in her adopted country. She knew the signs. She regretted she had not done enough to help combat it…7/8
The last words she wrote: “I have taken advantage of all the good things this country has to offer, while being unaware of the many problems that we still face.” 8/8

I’ve never been a fan of live fact-checking during a political debate, as I think viewers are watching to learn from the candidates and not from the journalists. There’s also too much of risk of an incorrect fact check, such as during the 2012 debate....
Romney was called out for saying something that turned out to be true. That said, @DavidMuir and @LinseyDavis last night did a good job. Their fact checks were spare but appropriate and accurate — intended as a clarification for viewers. Let’s review:
@DavidMuir @LinseyDavis 1. After Trump falsely claimed that Democrats favor execution of babies after birth, Davis pointed out that it is illegal to kill a baby after it’s born. Many viewers at that moment were probably wondering what Trump was talking about…

Serious question: What if the Biden administration ignored the debt ceiling and just kept paying bills if it's not raised? That's presumably a violation of the law, but what are the consequences? A lawsuit by House Republicans that takes years to litigate? Something else?
A smart person writes: "Once debt limit hits, Treasury runs out of dollars on a day-to-day basis and can’t pay bills because there are no dollars left in the Treasury to pay bills. And Treasury can’t print money - the Federal Reserve prints the money."
He adds: "such new debt in excess of the statutory ceiling would be legally tainted - a lot of the normal broker-dealers would not buy it because the legality of its existence could be challenged in court."

This ridiculous false claim has been debunked over and over, and yet of course Trump keeps saying it.

Eye-opening and riveting story on @RepDLesko's hidden past via @ronaldjhansen in the Arizona Republic. Unfortunately behind a paywall but here are some highlights. azcentral.com/in-depth/news/…
Lesko's public story is she was a victim pf physical and mental abuse. "The fuller story reveals a decade spent alongside a career criminal, with their lives cycling between temporary comfort in a new location to a hasty exit ahead of creditors or police."....
"New details uncovered by The Republic include her status as a key witness to her then-husband’s felonies in Scottsdale, financial problems in New Mexico, more than a dozen payouts to her business customers from an Arizona fund to cover derelict contractors, and multiple pleas.."

Tucker Carlson did another Ukrainian biolabs segment last night, featured a Daily Mail reporter who breathlessly reported “revelations” that had been completely debunked in my fact check that very morning. … washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/…
The Daily Mail relied on Hunter Biden laptop emails but apparently did no reporting beyond that. Here are the facts: Hunter was not involved in raising money for Metabiota. He wasn’t even on the investment committee that was tasked with deciding to invest….
The funding, via RSTP private equity group, had nothing to do with the Ukraine labs but was based on a pitch to sell insurance to companies as a hedge against pandemics – a business plan that failed. The investment is worth only 1/10th now of what was invested in 2014….

This is a good example of how just relying on emails without doing additional reporting can get you in trouble. My article was about the investment in Metabiota. These emails are about something else, not RTSP or RSTP 1. Follow along….
RSTP, LLC. made an investment in 2012 in Counsyl Series B. RSPP II Alpha Partners LLC and RSTP II Bravo Partners LLC made an investment in 2014 in Counsyl Series D. They were active until the sale of Counsyl to Myriad in May of 2018. For instance: crunchbase.com/funding_round/…
But In RSTP Fund I (which contained the Metabiota investment as well as 5 other investments), the vesting schedule was a 5 year period with a 2 year cliff. That meant none of the partners were vested until 2 years after the formation date. ....
