OK gonna listen to all of these, unless they're records I listen to a lot any way.…
300. AMERICAN IDIOT - Green Day.
Just 'roided-out rent-a-riff junk like some awful Warped Tour U2. I never liked this and like it less now.
299. SUNBATHING ANIMAL - Parquet Courts.
An achievement to be sure. Should probably use words like 'wide-ranging' and 'accomplished' here. But I can't imagine ever being in the frame of mind to go "Hey let's whack on the Courts and get down".
Cube sounds like a restless prodigy on this and the Bomb Squad do their job so well it's as if he never had another group. Like a lot of early 90s stuff it sounds v much of its time, but it's still got bite.
297. DEMON DAYS - Gorillaz.
Not bad as it turns out. Weird how one of the darkest singles of the era is by the daisy age boys and some cartoon monkeys.
296 TOTAL 4 - Various Artists.
Apparently this is better than any Cat Power or Olivia Tremor Control record. More fool me.
295. TOO FAR TO CARE - Old 97's.
This is meant to be shit-kickin' country rock I guess. Fun fact: there's no Steve Earle on this list.
294. AGAETIS BYRJUN - Sigur Ros
Everyone likes these guys. Sounds exactly like you remember.
293. VERSION 2.0 - Garbage.
Melodic, radio-ready faux-industrial pop. Pretty good but I don't like it.
292. LOOKING 4 MYSELF - Usher.
Ugh it starts with an autotune-happy thing that lifts the melody from 'Uptown Girl'. However, halfway through the record I found I was kind of enjoying it so it's maybe a pity that I will definitely never listen to this again.
291. SEPARATION SUNDAY - The Hold Steady
They're OK when they're cooking but they don't have many moves. Not that that's not always a bad thing. Lead guitarist MVP.
I lived in a place where this was in high rotation, but never heard the similarities to 'Two Suns' before.
Frequently pleasing in an Elephant 6ish way, but all a bit twee innit.
288. GOBLIN - Tyler, the Creator.
I like how it sounds murky and clean at the same time but it's too damn long. And whenever I tune in to what he's saying I don't like what he's saying.
287. DEAR SCIENCE - TV On The Radio.
Newsflash: 'Dear Science' is a really good record even when there's not a global financial crisis on.
206. SISTER - Sonic Youth.
Surprised to see this on the list as folks usually go for the records either side which are either more raw in sound or more ambitious in scope (about which, more much later). Had to listen to again to confirm that yes, it's great.
205. THE INFAMOUS - Mobb Deep.
Still listen to this all the time. Also a fan of the confusingly titled 'The Infamous Mobb Deep'. The week Prodigy died there was a mural up in Chaffers Park. He also signed a photo for Five Boroughs but that's beside the point.
204. SELECTED AMBIENT WORKS 85-92 - Aphex Twin.
I like him here, where he's not fucking with me too much. Have heard it a lot but decided to go back in and am glad I did.
203. BROWN SUGAR - D’Angelo.
I hated this at the time. Hated it. Obviously couldn't see what it was pointing towards and was too young, dumb and full of grunge to even get swinging tunes like 'Smooth' and 'When We Get By'.... shit damn motherfucker.
202. TREATS - Sleigh Bells.
Quick game's a good game. Agree w/ Spin: music for "tiny earbuds, cheap portable speakers, and low-res audio formats". (Confusingly, though, they later come out against the Oxford comma when discussing another record YOU'LL NEVER GUESS WHICH ONE!)
201. THE BATTLE OF LOS ANGELES - Rage Against the Machine.
When they reformed I saw them at Big Day Out & this denim girl down from us from us was dancing along like it was 1974 and they were Foghat or CCR so that's what this sounds like to me now. Keep on chooglin'!
LPs skipped due to familiarity/ recent listens: 21
LPs heard for 1st time: 32
Top 5 LPs heard for 1st time: Idler Wheel.../ Lost in the Dream/ OG/ Replica/ Funeral Dress.
Top 5 Revisits: Cursive/ Bikini Kill/ TVOTR/ Slint/ L7
A sampler box of pop's least appealing music.
199. SUPERUNKNOWN - Soundgarden.
198. ILLINOIS - Sufjan Stevens.
Skipping as I've heard it loads, even wrote about how great it was back in the day. I used to love this but didn't even bother going to see his Wellington show. Got some of the leftover big balloons from it though.
197. THE FAME MONSTER - Lady Gaga.
An EP. Hadn't heard the ones like 'Dance in the Dark' or 'Speechless' or anything in the shadow of those towering singles but they're not just filler eh. If I'd had the presence of mind back in the day I would have yelled "A star is here!"
196. C86 - Various Artists.
Some super band names. Had never heard the whole thing & now suspicious of the claim that it's UK indie's ground zero. I laughed twice. Just listen to this hilarious Swingers x Beefheart nugget. Proto-Belle & Sebastian it ain't.
"I got a couple of opinions that I hold dear
Got a whole lot of debt and a whole lot of fear
I got an itch that needs scratching but it feels alright
I got the need to blow it out on Saturday night"
Fun as shit, e.g. rhymes "cranium" with "brainium".
