English exceptionalism. We've seen a lot of that at work during the #Brexit debate. But have people noticed yet just how that plays when it comes to broader rights issues in respect of women and the entire LGBTI community?
Let's start over in Poland. earlier this month Poland blocked the EU signing off on Europe’s fundamental rights charter for a range of reasons including objections to the inclusion of LGBTI rights.
Just last week, following intervention from Poland's education Minister, many schools were forced to cancel activities designed to promote LGBT acceptance.
Meanwhile women speak of a culture of "fear and government intimidation" as the ruling party attempts to roll back abortion rights. Organisations like #CzarnyProtest and #StrajkKobiet are fighting back...

Let's head south, to Italy. The last two months have seen an unprecedented attack on women's rights from an unofficial coalition that includes the ruling party, La Lega, Forza Italia and Fratelli d'Italia. Again, the target is reproductive rights...
No direct attack on #legge194, the legislation that permits abortion. But the sense is that it is just a matter of time. Senators like #Pillon are already talking of such.
And this? This is against a background of a persistent campaign by the media, by the Church and by the Right against "la gender teoria", which locates the greatest threat to society in theories that allow people to step outside trad roles.
"la gender teoria" encompasses "rad feminism" (the good kind), which it ascribes to Judith Butler...gay rights and, of course, trans people.

It is not dissimilar to the "cultural marxism" that the alt-right, from Bannon to Bolsonaro rail against.
And in Hungary? They don't exactly have a word for gender. But they have an equivalent of gender studies, which fits the bill as far as "gender teoria" goes. Or rather they had.

A week or two back the government banned the official teaching of gender studies in Hungary!
Elsewhere, in Eastern Europe, in Spain, in Greece the right is on the rise. And while being anti-immigrant is a significant motor to their rise, it is clear that they want their "traditional family" back. That's no LGBT...and women back "where they belong"
On the plus side, resistance is also growing. Thousands taking to the streets in defence of women and LGBT rights. Women and LGBT people working together against a common enemy. We may not be winning...but we will go down fighting. Together!
At least, we will do in Europe. Not so much in the UK. Because here, where government attacks on individual rights via austerity continue, a chunk of British self-identified "feminism" has chosen to throw itself into the fiercest struggle in a generation....against Trans rights
So where our energy should be used to resist attacks on the least powerful, it is squandered on a pointless civil war.

Where we need unity, some folks are busy dividing women, LGB and T
Stupid? Or handmaidens of the Right? It is hard to tell. Most likely a bit of both with, on the part of a few, a very knowing involvement.

Whatever, at a time when unity and resistance are at a premium, in just one country that is being undermined by those with much to lose
Because presumably they believe that by trashing the rights of one group they will safeguard their own.

It doesn't work that way. It really doesn't. But by the time they realise, it may be too late for all of us.
