I’m having a hard time with two streams in my Jewish community right now. On the one hand, there are those who hold the tragedy of the #TreeOfLifeShooting as an exceptional act of hatred, and minimize the other horrendous violent acts of last week.
On the other hand, there are some who are using this moment criticize Jews for holding this tragedy as somehow distinct — with posts expressing disappointment that community vigils “failed to acknowledge how antisemitism and other forms of violence are interconnected.”
This is not the time for exceptionalism, nor is it the time for diminishment. There is space for the Jewish community to mourn its tragedy without mentioning other forms of violence, just as it is important for the fight against antisemitism to be against white supremacism.
It is not an either/or proposition. I am devastated over each violent act separately — the bombs targeting critics of Trump as an American and as a Democrat; the #KrogerShooting as a biracial person with a black father; the synagogue shooting as a Jew—and all of them as a human.
We tend to grieve more for the situations where we say—it could have been us. This is one such moment for the Jewish community. We are entitled to feel our pain — outside of the pain of the other injustices. That is the nature of grief.
And soon — as the pain eases — we can talk about our shared struggle as we fight against white supremacists and those who enable them together.
