Reason old MacBook Air is popular:

✅ Old USB ports
✅ SD card slot
✅ Cheap (for a Mac)
✅ Good enough performance

New MacBook Air:
❌ Thunderbolt / USB-C
❌ No SD card slot
❌ Not cheap
✅ Good enough performance
That’s not to say Apple is doing the wrong thing here. USB-A and SD are clearly less important with each year. But the reason the old MBA sold and continues to sell is for the masses who want to just get on with their work for a fair price. Not because of the name or form factor.
Speculation: Apple, 3-4 years ago, decided iPad & iPhone are the future. Macs are a tiny % of the business. So:

- Remove high + low end Macs
- Move to simple premium-only Mac lineup:
- MacBook
- MacBook Pro
- iMac
- iMac Pro

Low-end goes to iOS. High-end can manage w iMac Pro
☝️ A pretty clean, Apple-like strategy if they came out and said it. Stick to popular, mid-range Macs, at premium prices. It’s clear Mac isn’t the long-term strategy, so this would have been deemed to be a sensible step. So what happened?
- Too many people love and use Macs and macOS
- iOS didn’t get enough Pro apps in 2014-2018
- No USB-C on iPad until 2018
- Windows gets better / provides real Mac competition especially with Surface
- Constant negative stories about Apple abandoning the Mac spook the company
Someone internally makes the call:

- Apple's best customers use Macs and iOS devices
- You can't force people to jump to iOS. Especially if it's not feature and app compatible with macOS
- People leaving the Mac could actually end up with Windows + Android.

- Reverse course
- Start work on new MacBook Air, Mac Mini, Mac Pro
- Tell the press (April 2017)

And here we are in 2018 with a big, complicated Mac & iOS lineup. Better? For consumers yep. But it'll be tough for Apple when they need to try this again in a few years
