I will no longer call myself
“A Liberal Marine.”

My ideals are not “liberal.” Today’s rightwing defines them that way.
And I won’t let them define me.

My ideals are not “progressive”, or “liberal”—they’re American.

And that’s what I am.

“Give me your tired, your poor...” are not “liberal ideas”—and it’s not the “Statue Of Liberalism.”

Wanting to be a beacon of hope and liberty, for the world’s “tempest-tost ”, should never be labeled with scorn, or attacked, by any American.
We are a #NationOfImmigrants.
We are the inheritors of the society our founders created.

The Constitution and “The New Colossus” are their “last will and testament.”

And as stewards of their creation, we’re duty-bound to protect their dream.

Hopsitals and Universities were never meant to bankrupt people.

The men and women who built them, did so to heal and educate.
And every time they built another one, they made America “greater.”

Wanting to honor their intentions doesn’t make me “liberal”, it makes me “American.”
Wanting to protect the environment doesn’t make me a liberal, either.
No more than it did Lincoln, who singed the first act protecting a park—or Nixon, who created the @EPA.

Those acts weren’t for a “party.”
They were for our “people.”

That’s being an “American.”
Americans have a history of making mistakes.
Some of them, the most vile humanity has ever seen.

But we also strive to be better, and hold to account, those who lead us astray.

I believe this moment will prove, once again, that we can rise to that occasion.
#Nationalism has never been, nor will it ever be, the doctrine of our nation.
Nationalism is the business of tyrants and fearful people—and America, may I remind you, is the “land of the free, home of the brave.”
Anyone who says otherwise, is not an “American.”
Right now, American ideals and the dreams of our forefathers, are being trampled by those who value their own power above all else.

But we have the power to stop them—gifted by our founders, and enshrined in our Constitution:
Our voice and our #vote.
You can call yourself a Republican, a conservative, a liberal, or a Democrat—
that’s your choice.

I choose to be an “American.”

And I will use my voice, and my vote, to protect the vision our founders had for this great nation.

I will leave you with these words from our Declaration Of Independence—
“—but when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”
