An interesting aspect of the Rebel Wilson debacle idk if anyone has explored yet is the fact that it illustrates white folks really not being able to see themselves in characters that aren't them.
Like black folks have always shoe horned seeing ourselves in non-black characters all the time bc until recently we weren't seeing as much of ourselves on screen. We learned to see ourselves in plus sized, queer, differently abled, and everyday people regardless of their race.
But that doesn't work for them. They genuinely cannot see themselves in black characters regardless of how alike they are in other ways to them or how common their experiences are.
And if you look at it that way, it makes sense that Rebel Wilson could genuinely think of herself as the first plus-sized woman to lead a rom-com. She didn't see herself in Just Wright, Last Holiday, Brown Sugar, Phat Girlz, Single Moms Club, Real Women Have Curves etc.
Now how she didn't see herself in Babycakes, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, or Hairspray idk. Bc those were headed by plus sized white women and I have no explanation for that.
