I came across a black woman who said she understands why many black people don’t chase policies that specifically benefit black ppl from politicians because she’s intersectional and has multiple identities, black+woman. Why do white wonen never have multiple identities? 🧐🤔
I think it’s because in a world where white is default and normative, the term woman with no other descriptors is unconsciously understood to already mean *white* woman. So white and woman aren’t seen as multiple identities that conflict each other. Woman is already a raced term
when someone responds to idea that they can’t get behind politics that primarily benefit black ppl because they have multiple identities of black and woman, I think unconsciously the conflict they feel is an identification with both black ppl and white women. Woman = white woman
Since the term woman in a white supremacist society implicitly and automatically means white woman, the term white when explicitly added to woman just becomes an intensifier. Saying “white woman” is almost like saying “white white woman”.
This is why black intersectional feminists say things like I have multiple identities and I can’t choose just one, because they’re trying to reconcile being a black person with achieving honorary white womanhood.
Meanwhile for white women, “white” is not a second identity in addition to “woman.” Since woman implicitly means “white woman,” white is just an ingredient of the woman identity, not a whole separate identity. It creates no dissonance
Some people have taken this thread as me saying that white women put race before gender. I think it's subtly different. They don't have to choose one over the other because in White supremacist culture being a woman IS being white. They're inseparable. There's nothing to rank.
Neely Fuller says that in a white supremacist society, being a woman = white + female. Being a man = white + male. Nonwhites can easily achieve malehood or femalehood but to achieve manhood or womanhood depends on how well they can approach and approximate whiteness...
...which at the end of the day is a losing proposition because you will never, ever be white or honorary white no matter how close you think you get. This is why intersectional feminists keep butting heads with white feminists, because they fight for women's rights but...
...in a racist society only white females are ever really women. On the male side that's why MRA always inevitably leads to white nationalism. If man equals white male, then implicitly it's really White Male Rights Advocate.
when intersectional feminists keep asking why they should choose race-first ideology over weighing both equally or being gender-first, that's why. Because if you don't get rid of the racism in society, you will never be deemed a woman in the first place so fighting for woman...
...ends up meaning you're inevitably fighting for someone else, namely white women. You need to solve the racism first in order to be considered a woman at all.
To support my point, this is a link to a twitter search of “multiple identities” and “woman”. Notice no white women use that phrase. Because woman automatically means white. mobile.twitter.com/search?q=Woman…“multiple%20identities”&src=typed_query&f=live
This woman’s research is exactly what I was referring to in this thread. Gender as an abstract construct never exists in a vacuum separate from race
