The whole idea was a colony of very respectable small farmers. To that end, slavery was outlawed from Georgia's founding.
But turns out urban poor from London & subtropical bushwhacking weren't a great mix.

At least one kid got eaten by an alligator
Also it turned out really hard to convince rich whites to pay good wages, or poor whites to work for low ones, when they could both see slavery happening right across the river.
A wrinkle! There was also a colony of Germans in Georgia called Salzburg, who were actually pulling off the small farming thing that British Georgia's were going for.
The growing pro-slavery faction in Georgia haaaaated those guys

It was really hard to tell the colony's trustees in England that white ppl can't work outside in GA, when there's a colony full of Germans doing it all day every day.
So the wannabe slavers had to go on multiple fronts.

1. They cooked up some rationales about people from cool northern climates, hot weather, humours, blah blah

These arguments were deliberately built to play on trustees' educational background & beliefs.
2. Pro-slavery colonists were generally wealthy, & anti-slaver white colonists were poor.

Pro-slavery started canceling their poor white debtors' debts in exchange for signing petitions stating that slavery was necessary.
It's important to note that modern notions of race didn't really exist yet. Pro-slavers' arguments that whites were too delicate for southern field work, but not Africans, was key to building popular culture of whites & blacks being biologically different.
