They had a name for this acclimation period. It was called "seasoning."

And they all agreed that it took about 3 years
Some of it was acquiring physical resistance to disease, some of it was just learning how to do the tasks.

But it was KNOWN. Slaves on sale that had already gone through this seasoning sold for more than those who had just arrived.
Similarly- part of the problem with indentured servants was that by the time they could actually work at full speed, they were close to done with their contract.
