Last night I ran into a few Marines from my old unit.

They informed me that a good friend of mine, Sgt Lynott—who I lost contact with—took his own life a few years ago.

It was terrible news.

He left behind a wife and two little girls.

This morning, I left Philly and came down to Annapolis to visit my other two brothers—who are buried at the Crownsville Veteran Cemetery.

I stopped at our favorite breakfast place, and had breakfast.

When I went to leave, the waitress informed me that another customer had already paid for my meal.

It took everything I had to avoid choking up, right in front of her.

I thanked her, went to my car, composed myself—and started driving to the cemetery.

But I can’t do it.
It’s just too much.

So now I’m sitting on the side of the road, sharing this with all of you.

And honestly—it’s taking me quite a while to write it.

But why am I sharing this with you?
I’m sharing this, because I want you to do something nice for a Veteran today.

Because someone buying me breakfast today nearly reduced me to tears.

Because you have no idea what these men and women wrestle with.

And because a kind gesture—just might save a life.
