Of ALL THE COVERS, this is the one chosen to open the digital edition of the TLJ comic adaptation collection.

Tell me again how these two aren’t the primary focus of the trilogy?
So, I waited until the collected edition to read the TLJ comic adaptation. Should I live tweet my readthrough?
Alright, TLJ comic adaptation read-through reaction thread incoming.
I told you @spaceabba that I was gonna use that for everything now. 🙌
LOUDER FOR THE ANGRY RULES-LAWYERS AND WORLD-BUILDERS IN THE BACK! #fanboytears
Gee, who else has this happened to? THIS is the real curse of the Skywalkers: used for their power instead of loved for their inherent (INHERENT NOT EARNED) worth and dignity and luminous beings within the web of the Living Force.
THAT’S NOT HOW THE FORCE WORKS, LUKE
Literally LOLed because this is exactly how congregational church works. There’s always someone who keeps trying to get their idea through a committee over and over again in slightly different forms each time.
I see you, Carrie. <3
Bless Canady and his total lack of an innner monologue.

Also, in the Empire days, that kind of line would have gotten you Force-choked from across a star system. Just sayin’.
If you’ve ever wondered what the life of a parish minister is like... this is it.
Just a thought... maybe part two of three is not the best place to make such a bold statement, Hugs.
*cries in Tico*

I wasn’t sure a comic panel would have the same effect on me as the film version. That’s what I get for doubting.
Holy shit, so much emotional resonance in this one panel. My Queen, carrying the yoke of leadership and loss while those around her cheer the immediate victory.
Oh wow, does he look haunted here or what? Showing the visual cue here, when the abuse is imminent, allows it to be used as a short cut later to tell us when a person is similarly haunted. Bet they use it on Kylo/Ben, too, esp when direct abuse isn’t imminent.
“Uh”? Poe, what would you RATHER be doing with Finn? ;D
OK so like we know from the beginning of this the HE KNEW SOMEONE WAS COMING and that’s why he got all dressed up in his Jedi robes, and then he does this with the Jedi lightsaber? SO EXTRA. SO SKYWALKER. #hubris
OBI-WAN WOULD HAVE AT LEAST SAID HELLO
*CRINGES EVERY DAMN TIME*
Comic book Chewbacca always has the best conditioner.
OMFG This is one of the primary points of Star Wars in just a few panels! Stay with me...

Luke realises that because he CUT HIMSELF OFF from the Force, and therefore life itself, that he missed one of the most important events— the loss of his friend and brother-in-law.
That disconnection and isolation amplifies the hurt, leading to him losing control of his emotions and his Force connection, making object float in a Force tantrum. Until Chewie REACHES OUT to RECONNECT...
Luke is brought back into the web of life that gives rise to the Force itself. It’s not meditation or litanies that calms him down and helps him control his choices, but CONNECTION and RELATIONSHIP, even the SMALLEST TOUCH. “It’s all right,” he says...
AND WE CUT TO THE SAME LINE OVER KYLO/BEN.

I don’t know how much more obvious they can make it, folks, without blatantly giving it away ahead of time. And if they don’t follow through... it’ll be some of the worst writing I’ve ever encountered. And I’ve read a lot.
ALSO, this just amplifies how important it is that Chewbacca is the one who supports Rey in going after Ben, who flies her up to the Supremacy, who puts her in a coffin, and who shoots her out into space. That’s how deeply he understands family, both born and created.
I say this a lot, but it bears repeating. NEVER FORGET how Han dropped everything and left Leia alone and pregnant to go help Chewbacca rescue his own son. If there is even a sliver of a chance that Chewie can bring Ben home, he’s gonna do whatever it takes.
TL;DR: CHEWBACCA IS THE BEST.
Kylo/Ben in the throne room with Snoke. Fascinated by what dialogue they use word for word and what they adapt.
Take this scene, for example. Almost word for word, but Snoke has extra lines, making Kylo/Ben’s internal conflict even more explicit. It was downright obvious to me and so many others from the films, but someone felt a bigger anvil was needed. Guess who’s NOT actually a villain?
This one’s interesting, too. In the film, the camera cuts to Kylo/Ben standing up right as Snoke says “Hope lives”. Here, he’s still on the floor, but we also have the “the last seed” line, which implies something that has not yet become what it’s supposed to be.
OHO! Remember the panel wherein I describe Hux’s art as being haunted by the specter of abuse? Snoke has just claimed that Anakin/Vader would be ashamed of Kylo/Ben == classic abuser technique. This is the reaction panel: same haunted shading on the face.
ORLY
The films have so many lines that I feel are directly addressing toxic fans. Looks like they continued that tradition in the comic.
So. She’s not wrong. But in this particular exchange she’s also projecting her marriage all over Poe.

(Aside: I adore Han and Leia, always have. And I also know that most marriages don’t survive the loss of a child, no matter how much love there is.)
MY HEART
ACKBAR
OMG MY SPACE QUEEN
HER POWER
That’s right, General, don’t you dare let the writers take away your breath like they did to your mother.
GEE ARE THOSE DICE IMPORTANT?
Another anvil, folks. PAY ATTENTION. Who else is referred to as only hope, last hope, sliver of hope? Who else has the same name as the character she was originally talking to when she recorded this? Why repeat a line three times if it’s not meant to be core to the story?
These stories are cycles. Each new generation has a chance to be better than the one before it. This generation will be the one to break free.
Fun fact: once upon a time I was gonna join the local roller derby league and my name was gonna be Slamilyn Holdo.

Then I broke my leg at the first intake session.
ROOOOOOOOOSE
Gonna be adding this panel to my collection of reaction pics.
I love that we see the scene with Maz from her perspective.
Rose is every woman everywhere.
FOOOOOORCE BOOOOOOND
OMFG the Force Bond scenes are also from the opposite perspective I’m dyyyyyying
THIS IS NOT GOING TO GO THE WAY YOU THINK
This never not makes me LOL. The fact that in this he actually walks into the hut, into her “private” space, just makes it worse. The sexual imagery and innuendo in TLJ was so blatant even an asexual like me recognized it. 🤣
What a beautiful panel.
AGAIN FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK!
Oh. Oh. They gave this its own panel. This is so important! Something inside her has awakened... but THIS is where she begins to own it, to make it HERS and not someone else’s. We’re gonna see this again, I bet, knowing what’s coming in the story from the film.
WHAT DID I TELL YOU.

Kylo/Ben is her EQUAL in power, her equal in the Force, and how she relates to him is HER CHOICE and NO ONE ELSE’S.
Also, she’s been trapped on a desert planet, practically a slave, for nearly fifteen years. In this story, water repeatedly means freedom for Rey — remember Takodana?
MMM HMM.
YES IT IS, REY.
So Luke has a point here about how stories grow, but this particular example is like, exactly spot on? And by all accounts didn’t actually change how most people thought of Vader? So he’s just being... cranky?

Old white men can be such a pain.
DJ calling the throne room “Snoke’s boudoir” adds such a layer to the whole story with that one line. Nice work, Rian.
BIG MOOD
Finn: Wasn’t it great, all that fighting stuff we hate?

Rose: Nope. Gotta save something I love for it to be worth anything at all.

🧐
More anvils dropping for the those who Didn’t Get It The First Time.
I cannot say enough how much I love the Force Bond scenes reversing perspective. We’re seeing them where they’re not “supposed” to be, and seeing them from the other’s perspective. Kylo, half-stripped and outdoors; Rey, inside Kylo’s bedroom, his private space.
So. I’m by far not the first one to point this out, but I find it significant that in the comic they did not diminish the very clear imagery of Rey falling into a hole surrounded by dark growth that looks like hair, a hole in which she reaches a new level of self-awareness.
Remember the whole exchange with Chewie and Luke? This is that same point about connection and touch, except on steroids. This is driven by the active Cosmic Force, not just the Living Force.
LUKE DO YOU NOT LISTEN TO YOUR OWN WORDS WHEN YOU MAKE DECISIONS?!
WHAT’S THAT YOU SAID, REY?
Chewbacca: BEST DAD
Oh COME ON why not “PEW PEW”?!
CAPTAIN
OH LOOK ANOTHER ANVIL

They’re both shackled, you see. Emotional and mental handcuffs are just as real as physical ones.
So beautiful
Snoke is going after Rey. One eye darkened, the other clear.
The framing in this is exquisite. Also, note, another opportunity to tone down the symbolism by making his fingers less obvious, and they went for it. Snoke’s boudoir, indeed.
Holy shit this interpretation of That Look from the film. You and me, and nothing else matters for this single moment. Just gorgeous, and a stunning adaptation of some of the best acting I’ve ever seen.
So. I know this scene is fraught with a lot of real-life baggage, and Kylo/Ben is not at his best here. But when you think about his life, his context, what he’s TRYING to say is kind of amazing.
I’m never going to argue that he wasn’t loved by his family, or that he didn’t love them back. But he DID spend his life growing up being left behind for bigger things — government, commerce, etc. As a kid, you begin to think that you yourself is not enough, even if you’re shown
love when your family’s around. Because they keep LEAVING. And then, when it turns out you do have a power bigger than yourself, everyone suddenly starts treating you like a freak, a monster, and they DON’T TELL YOU WHY. Remember, they hid Vader’s link from him.
He finds out from the news. And, even the best of us will struggle with self-confidence when we’re competing with entire worlds for our parents’ attention. Not all of us have a Snoke waiting in the wings, though. Snoke offers him validation, and by the time
Kylo/Ben realizes that Snoke doesn’t want him just for himself, either, only for his power, he thinks it’s too late. Enter Rey. Rey tells him he’s not alone, that it’s not too late... and Kylo responds with “you come from nothing, you have no place in this story, you’re nothing.”
In his context, coming from nothing and having no place in the story is FREEDOM. It means that when someone says they want you THEY MEAN IT. He is trying to tell her, in his terrible way, that his care for her is genuine because it can’t possible be about her legacy, etc.
You’re nothing, he says, BUT NOT TO ME. He’s using the only language he’s ever been taught — and don’t listen to years of Han and C3PO and R2D2 negging at each other and everyone else, plus Snoke’s abuse, and tell me Kylo/Ben has been taught how to speak to people kindly.
And then, and then, SHE LEAVES. Like everyone else. He is DISCONNECTED once again. Of course he loses it.
TL;DR: You should have taken off the damn glove, Ben.
And, let me be clear — Rey should have left. He wasn’t ready to truly break free, and it’s not her job to save him. Boy needs to save himself. But connection and compassion, with healthy boundaries, is how he gets there. Hence why this is part TWO of a TRILOGY.
Oh. OH.
“I’m being torn apart.”
“I want to be free of this pain.”
FREE THE STORMTROOPERS, FINN
Huh. What had happened the last time we saw him drawn like this? Oh yeah, Snoke had just shocked him with Force Lightning.
SO EXTRA. SO SKYWALKER.
OMG these variant covers are amazing.
ALL. THE. ANVILS.

Leia doesn’t give up hope, even now. Why should we?
There’s those dice again. Do you think they might possibly be IMPORTANT?
I CAN’T
This is after they fire on Luke. When else have we seen him drawn like this? After he’s abused by Snoke. After Rey leaves him. And now this. In Kylo/Ben’s story, Luke is an antagonist.
Twice now they’ve kept the original dialogue from the film around this particular construction. The fact that Poe changes “restore the Republic” into “burn the First Order down”, is going to be really important in Ep IX. Saving what we love, not fighting what we hate.
He’s so disassociated he can’t even form coherent thoughts, much less sentences. But sure, tell me again about how he’s a cold, calculating, perfect villain.
WHAT. Could this POSSIBLY be relevant to the fact that this is part TWO of a TRILOGY?
And, again, keeping the same shot of him from the film, with hin the dark, and light shining in on him through windows. The Force is not done with him yet.
There’s those dice again. WHAT COULD IT MEAN.
That’s all, folks. Goodnight!
