1/2. Authoritarians try to keep the othered, scapegoated, and marginalized down by lobbing accusations of "divisiveness." They make false calls to unify with a nation that defines internal "enemies" out. The same dynamic occurs in abusive churches and other analogous situations.
2/2. If you insist we focus on "unity" without overcoming the very real injustices that oppressors enact on oppressed groups, you are playing into the oppressors' hands. If you call for the abused to "unify" with their abusers without any accountability, you are reopening wounds.
Addendum: Don't uncritically throw around the language of "divisiveness." Most of the time it's not just unhelpful, but actively harmful. Real peace and unity rest on justice and equality.
