So I've been wondering if I should say something here because I am busy and tired and I don't need the attention, but I think I must: the WFC guest of honor lineup for 2019 is sad. The con takes place in Los Angeles but all the GOHs are white. The theme is Fantasy Noir.
Los Angeles has a huge Latinx population. But the one mention of diversity on the website right now is about "culinary diversity," making me think POC are only good for making tacos.
On top of that there's the odd choice of having Robert Silverberg, who was recently the cause of much Internet talk due to some of his comments related to Jeminsin, as the toastmaster.
I dislike the GOH system, but like it or not it sets a tone for an event. And right now it does not set a good tone. The World in World Fantasy is looking very... small and not wordly.
Normally I'd bite my tongue and whatever, but today I just read a story that says one out of every two Latinos in the United States says that life has become more difficult for them in the past year. And it just struck me that a Los Angeles-- npr.org/2018/11/13/666…
con would be a great opportunity to show some of the Latinx writers and creators around (Love and Rockets creators, pioneers like Ernest Hogan, etc), and right now I doubt it will be the case. Furthermore, I shouldn't even be writing these tweets because proactively someone--
ought to have thought that a more diverse lineup and focus might be useful from the get go. It really is exhausting bringing this stuff up over and over again.
So here I am telling you this, hoping I don't get hate mail for it (haha). And before someone says why don't you say this privately, I think this stuff needs to be brought up in public. Also: I won a World Fantasy Award in 2016. This is not me bean a bully, etc. I just want--
SFF cons in general to consider their GOH system, their lineups, and the impressions they give long before a website goes live, long before a con begins. Make it part of the baking process and not an afterthought.
Anyway, that is all. If you are involved with an event, small or large, please consider how you can make it better for a wide variety of authors and attendees. If you already are: thanks. It does matter.
