thinking back, killer7 was really the first game that made me understand combining game mechanics and narrative in a meaningful synergy, instead of the latter being subservient to the former as is all too common in traditional western game design

spoilers to follow, obv
the game being on rails just felt awkward at first. having to get used to it throughout the game makes it all the more powerful when you realize its intent - to convey that neither you nor garcian had any true agency in the narrative, moving like a pawn.
your paths, obstacles, and outcomes were all predestined, a part of some struggle beyond time that you cannot hope to understand.
the subversion/disabling of the scan mechanic in the final chapter is also genius. you can continue to play just fine, but it's never the same. you're stronger, in a sense, but still feel vulnerable. it's a p good mechanical manifestation of living with trauma.
the game's political subplots are, at best, half finished, due to the amount of cut content. but that nonsensical element kinda accidentally serves as a cohen brothers-like stage of nihilistic non sequitur, for the game's cast to struggle and become humanized in.
point is, suda is a fucking genius for pulling this off like... 10 years before this design approach even began to approach the mainstream in the west. i feel very similarly about the first no more heroes, which is why i also recommend it
