Second Chance Bikes "business" is BOOMING! Yesterday I picked up seven bikes from a relief agency . They are all fairly light repair jobs. Four are kids bikes. They hope I can get them ready for Christmas. The adult ones I picked out from the 18 they 1/
had as likely quiick-turnaround. That is frequently optimistic - closer examination finds more issues. Here is a bike I delivered Sunday to a 19-yr-old refugee youth who was homeless. I replaced a shifter, added reflectors, kickstand, and basket, bought locks and removable 2/
lights. I scavenge parts from the bikes not readily refurbishable whenever possible - I call them organ donors. But baskets, lights, and locks are purchased using donations. I am retired on SS and savings and can't self-fund those items. These are typical prices. 3/
I visited an area homeless shelter last week - a one-night-only deal in a church basement - and saw several folks arriving on decrepit bikes. They get a mat to sleep on out of the cold & 2 meals. Then they go back out in the weather with whatever belongings they have. 4/
I did another triage pass through my garage when making room for the seven additions - I culled two that I will dismantle; that left 19. Some need mostly tire work and kickstands. I'd like to put racks/baskets on some of those and get them out on the street before Christmas. 5/
SOOOO... if you are looking for things to spend money on for this holiday season, rest assured any donations to SecondChanceBikes will be put to good and much-appreciated use. 6/6
PS: I have twice been approached in parking lots by people who saw the magnetic signs I bought for my truck a month or so ago. They asked about the program, and said they had bikes to contribute. I gave them my 2CB business card and said let me know when u want me to pick them 1/
up. I hope they drop a few bucks along with the bikes. Several people have done that. One specifically said she'd pay for baskets for the 2 she donated.
Then Friday i got email from a youth outreach facility - they have transitional housing for 18-24 yr old men who've been 2/
homeless at least 12 months. She said they have bikes for residents to ride to work and 4 have issues they can't fix - could I help? She'd heard of me from another caseworker I'd spoken to last week looking for help. My ultra-low-key marketing technique is gaining steam! 3/3
