It's #InternationalMensDay and I see a lot of men sharing that image of all the problems men face (high rates of suicide, violence etc.), but not sharing any solutions. But hey, I guess it's cool that we got a day where we can point at feminists and yell: "I told you so!" Go us!
And yes, I have some ideas on how to try and start solving some of these issues. However, I guarantee, if you're the type of person who read my first post and got defensive because it felt like an attack on men, you're really not going to like what I have to say.
Because it's men whose shoulders the responsibility falls upon. Only we can fix this. Not feminists like Clementine Ford. It's not on them. It's on us. Toxic masculinity is one of the causes of high male suicide rates. The high rates of violence against men, well, that's men too.
So what are we going to do to fix this? Are we going to sit at our computers and complain about how nobody takes men's emotions seriously, or are we going to start the process which leads to men's emotions being taken seriously. Are we going to complain how men can be victims...
Or are we going to try and figure out why so many men only know how to respond to the situations in front of them with violence. And please do not respond with: "But woman can be violent too!" This isn't about them. This is our day. We asked for it. Now, let's not waste it.
Obviously we can't solve everything in a day, and obviously we don't need a specific day, either. But we can make a start. Declare today: The day men finally stopped complaining and decided to take action! Otherwise, this time next year, we'll be having this conversation again.
