Seriously. I’m exhausted. I’m not sleeping well. I went to the doctor. I got the prescription for the sleep study. It took a long time to schedule the sleep study. I had the sleep study. The sleep study was positive.
It took so long to schedule the follow up appointment with the pulmonologist. I’m so despondent @aimeemcarroll worked the phones to find me a sooner appointment with another pulmonologist at a further site.
I just had that visit. Took like 5 minutes. They wrote me a prescription for CPAP and had me walk it upstairs where they HAD TO SCHEDULE ANOTHER APPOINTMENT.
They also had to take all my info again, including my insurance card, like I haven’t been seen IN THIS SAME SYSTEM a gazillion times every year for the past 15 years.
So all this and now I get to wait again for another appointment on the saga to get the therapy I, and everyone else, knew I needed from the start.
What was the purpose of today’s visit? I have no idea. Why wouldn’t they schedule me for the next visit - which would be obvious to all - on the same day? I have no idea. Why not get preapproval for the CPAP given my positive study before this visit? I have no idea.
Why make anyone jump through these hoops? I have no idea. Why does anyone think this is a functioning process? I have no idea.
I am, arguably, one of the most knowledgeable experts on the US health care system around - and I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS HEALTH CARE SYSTEM.
So another week for me to get no sleep and be bitter and tired and crabby and frustrated and I am so so so sorry to everyone around me. I’m actually crying in the car right now because I was stupidly sure that today would be the day this would start to get better.
I mean, I know how to work the system better than almost anyone I know. I have resources and support. I can move mountains in this arena. And I can barely hold it together. I have no idea how everyone else gets through this.
Oh as a bonus it’s time to get my ulcerative colitis meds filled again, so that saga is about to begin anew as well!…
Every interaction begins with a doctor getting him ready to sell me on CPAP, and I interrupt them to say, “Stop talking. You had me at ‘sleep apnea’. JUST GIVE ME THE CPAP!”
Let me also be clear: every single individual I’ve interacted with, including the doctors, has been kind and professional. Some are friends. It’s not their fault. None want this. It’s the system that’s broken.
My favorite responses are the ones explaining to me how the health care system works and that I don't understand...
