Uma Chakravarti is being quoted by the 'Brahminical Patriarchy' gang to endow their highfalutin bunk with academic legitimacy. The creative rider that critiquing 'BP' is not anti-Brahman tirade is just that: a disclaimer to disown what is cleverly constructed hate speech. 1/n
Why is Uma Chakravarti being cited? Simple. The 'BP' gang knows that few will bother to check. Reading is not an Indian strength. So you get away with hocus pocus, abracadabra stuff like BP is about "the intersectionality of feminism and the critique of upper caste hegemony". 2/n
In April 1993 EPW published Uma Chakravarti's paper 'Conceptualising Brahmanical Patriarchy in Early India -- Gender, Caste, Class and State'. It was about Brahmans, it was about locating social structures in early India within the larger global framework of 'patriarchy'. 3/n
I am no scholar of the Rig Ved or the now debunked 'Aryan invasion' which form the core of Uma Chakravarti's paper. The little I understood is that her thesis was essentially about the subordination of upper caste women by Brahmans in early India. Like the Vedic times. 4/n
It would be safe to presume the phrase 'Brahmanical Patriarchy' was coined by Uma Chakravarti in early-1990s and formalised in EPW in 1993 to portray social structure in early India. If there is an earlier reference to 'Brahmanical Patriarchy', I am open to correction. 5/n
The phrase 'Brahmanical Patriarchy', about practices followed by Brahmans in early India, was appropriated by placard-and-parcha activists whose activism (globally) is essentially rooted in hate-mongering cleverly disguised as 'dissent'. Make no mistake about agenda. 6/n
So, to protect themselves from legal charges of hate-mongering, #LeLi activists changed 'Brahmanical Patriarchy' to 'Brahminical Patriarchy' and claimed their critique was not against Brahmans but 'caste hierarchy'. If so, why not 'Caste Patriarchy'? Or simply 'Patriarchy'? 7/n
Therein lies the clue. 'Caste Patriarchy' or 'Patriarchy' would not serve the #LeLi agenda of engineering hate towards a particular caste (Brahman) and paint an entire community (Hindu) in the bleakest of colours. They are helped by self-loathing Hindus to achieve this goal. 8/n
Some questions and answers.
Do we have a problem about women's rights and equality? Yes.
Are they faith or caste specific? No.
Am I speaking from a position of privilege? No.
Do I believe in caste or hierarchy? No.
Do I practice patriarchy? Ask my partner and daughters.
Some have mentioned #FreeSpeech in the context of the odious placard that @jack stupidly held, presumably to look smart and 'in' with the gang. Yes, it is #FreeSpeech repugnant as it may be. But this debate is not about #FoE It is about hate disguised as activism. Period. 10/n
If you are curious and interested in calling the bluff of 'Brahminical Patriarchy' peddlers, I would recommend Uma Chakravarti's paper. You can read it here:…
