reflecting on how the absurdity of brexit reveals the fundamental brokenness of the british constitution, which is perhaps why the chronically sensible are so enraged by it
iirc: (1) referendum held purely to discipline ruling party, is lost, fractures ruling party (2) those responsible quit (3) prime minister selected by everyone else quitting (4) election held to strengthen ruling party, is lost, fractures ruling party
(5) two years of negotiation which fails to resolve fundamental problem of irish border, absent in referendum argument but determining entire process (6) those responsible quite (7) ???? no party process capable of stopping the thing that majority of reps don't want ????
the catastrophic magnitude of brexit enlarges the ordinary malfunctioning of representative democracy, exposes the multitudinous incompetencies, incapabilities, constitutional absurdities, unaccountabilities and democratic deficits of the system as a whole
opposing desires: a strong-man leader (in britain's unique psychomythology, this is a bumbling aristocrat) to sweep away the failures of democracy and make brexit happen -VS- a restitution of a peaceful prior state in which systemic absurdities are (for the bourgeois) sublimated
this latter desire is the deep wish of the fbpe: britain as muddling along alright, britain as respected parliamentary system, britain as warm tea, britain as polite disagreement, britain as firm and nuclear handshakes
but brexit is (if you'll forgive the apocalyptic thinking) a rupture with what's gone before, a rent that exposes the absurdities and inequities always present within the system, previously invisible only to those insulated from them by economic status
when the joke is cracked, there's no uncracking it. you can't shove the fart back in once it's farted. there's no going back to tea-and-biscuits britain, because we've all seen now the mould at the bottom of the biscuit tin.
push your average people's voter hard enough, i reckon, and you get: "i just want this to go away. make it stop. i just want it never to have happened." but not only has it happened, it was happening before the vote even took place.
we may be able to not leave the EU, and membership of the single market looks increasingly plausible, but we will never be able to stop brexit: whatever the constitutional outcome, brexit has happened and will keep on happening.
the points of organisation, as i see them, are not the fantasy of restitution but rather: (1) direct, material solidarity with migrants & racialised people (2) pushing for state-level redistributive economics via all available routes (3) mutual aid in the unfolding disaster
because even if we stayed in the eu, the fundamental socioeconomic mechanisms of racism and impoverishment which led to the vote (capitalism, carceral borders, white supremacy), which are in the truest sense what brexit is, would continue amplified: they have been cracked open
