<THREAD> Buried in yesterday's news: the Knesset voted AGAINST recognising the #YazidiGenocide perpetrated by Islamic State. Why?
The #YazidiGenocide vote fell 58-38 along clear party lines. Netanyahu's coalition voted against. The opposition mostly voted in favour. The Arab Joint List--they weren't even in the room.
Deputy FM Tzipi Hotovely explained the official line: "We as a government cannot agree to this bill... until there's a UN resolution on the matter." (This must be the first time Israel is waiting for instructions from the UN for matters of policy.)
The coalition imposed coalition discipline, although Michael Oren tells me there was no specific threat--you just don't defy the government whip. He was in favour of #YazidiGenocide recognition. "You can't fall on every sword."
Yehudah Glick was a co-sponsor of #YazidiGenocide recognition and voted against *his own bill*. He says he was "ashamed" to toe the government line but was obliged to obey coalition discipline.
Michael Oren says he doesn't know why the government ordered him to vote against #YazidiGenocide but he assumes it's because it was an opposition bill.
And why did Joint List (bar Jabareen & Khenin) skip the vote? Ayman Odeh's spox says in principle he's in favour of recognising all "historic injustices", but he just "didn't make the vote". As for the others, they have no idea. There doesn't seem to have been a whip either way.
But the real reason, according to an MFA source: #Israel is worried about precedent. Recognising the #YazidiGenocide would raise awkward questions. What about the Armenian Genocide (despite Turkish anger)? What about the Rohingya Muslims (while Israel sells arms to Myanmar)?
Was this bill an attempt to embarrass the gov't during a tense political time? Sponsor @KseniaSvetlova says she was pushing for ages and got fobbed off, and tabled the bill before Knesset could be dispersed. And nobody has given a real reason why the coalition should oppose it.
Svetlova: "Our state was built from the ashes of the Holocaust... What does 'never again' mean?... I thought until recently that the answer was quite clear but after the voting in the Knesset, I'm no longer sure." She plans to table #YazidiGenocide recognition again soon.
Oh, and Yazidi sex slavery survivor and Nobel Prize Laureate Nadia Murad personally visited the Knesset last year to plead for genocide recognition. The government didn't send a single representative to the committee hearing. #YazidiGenocide
