Sabrimala temple is dedicated to Bhagwaan Ayyappa (God of growth).

- Shaivism
- Vaishavism
- Shaktism
Ayyappa is also commonly known as 'Manikandan' because, according to the legend of his birth, his divine parents tied a golden bell (mani) around his neck (kandan) soon after his birth.

After Maa Durga killed Mahishasur, his sister Mahishi, set out to avenge her brother's death.

Q6: What is the revenue collection at Sabrimala temple?

During the festival season of Nov’17 to Jan’18, Sabrimala temple’s revenue collection stood at INR 255 crore.
Q7: What is the tradition at Ayyappa temple in Sabrimala?

Sabrimala is one of the toughest pilgrimages in Hindu dharma.

Devotees are expected to observe,
- 41 days of fasting
- complete abstinence from alcohol & non-vegetarian food
- follow celibacy
- control over their anger & speech
- allow the hair & nails to grow without grooming
- maximise their help to others
- bath twice a day
- wear plain black or blue coloured traditional clothes
Many of these devotees follow traditional mountainous forest path - approximately 61 km form Erumely, 13 km from Vandiperiyar and 8 km from Chalakayam which is believed to be taken by Bhagwaan Ayyappa himself.
Bhagwaan Sastha (Ayyappa) appeared as human in this earth and sat in Naishteeka Brahmacharya yoga in this Maha Yogapeetam.

That is the reason; no other temple has these strict rules for 41 days Vratham (fasting). No other temple has these 18 steps and its puja practices.
The yogic power of Ayyappa is attached with the holy 18 steps. That is the reason, a special ritual is done to these steps daily. To withstand this yogic synergy emanating at the premises, a person is advised to follow sincere austerities.
