"The curious incident of the denialist in the Anthropocene" (with apologies to @mark_haddon & A. Conan Doyle). We are in week 4 since #ExtinctionRebelion's resounding Declaration in London, & the most terrifying is what hasn't happened. Thread (sorry). 1/
rebellion.earth/declaration/
The terrifying thing that hasn't happened is that no one has told us we are wrong.
Scientists (myself included) are raising the alarm. Politicians, journalists and the public agree on #ClimateBreakdown is an immense problem, even if some don't agree with tactics or targets. 2/
Just a couple of years ago, the denialists and fossil-fuel lobbies would have been out in full force, denying the urgency of climate change, denying the rapid and radical measures that are necessary to fight it. I am sure they are still out there, inventing new lies. 3/
But now deniers are finding much less echo. We are now firmly in the Anthropocene. #ClimateBreakdown is here, there, everywhere, and worsening. No one is telling #ExtinctionRebellion that we are wrong in recognizing a threat to human survival, and demanding radical action. 4/
There is broad agreement we are right - but at the same time so little movement and action in the right direction. People, politicians and businesses are as though paralyzed - because of their own fossil fuel dependence & because the way forward is unknown, so very different. 5/
We face the problem that a tiny minority has broken free from that paralysis and is running around, like in a nightmare, trying desperately to wake up and rescue everyone else. All kinds of (non-violent!) tactics & communication are being tried out. Every minute counts. 6/
And, terrifyingly, our worst enemies are silent, in retreat. But because they've so poisoned and paralyzed our societies, we are finding it difficult to get others to believe in another future, and wake up and fight like hell for it, rather than walk steadily towards collapse. 7/
What can we do, more than is already being done, demonstrations, arrests, massive civil disobedience? We have to insist, like the @sunrisemvmt in the US and the children on school strike for climate, on a different future. We have both to stop the old and bring forward the new.8/
By bringing forward a new society, a new way of living, we will also be making our communities more organized, more capable of working together to face challenges while protecting those most vulnerable. This will be essential in decades to come. It's a lifelong effort. 9/
It's an effort that the actions of past generations have pushed onto those alive now & in the future, whether they knew it or not. Our work, our purpose is creating and protecting the future, while destroying the forces that would destroy us. It's changing our "civilization". 10/
I don't have a neat ending here, just a call to (non-violent!) arms and courage for the long haul. Remember that we're in this together, and that the vast majority agrees with us, but doesn't yet have the imagination or courage to get out of this past and create the future. 11/
It's our job, as much as anything else, to catalyze everyone's imagination and give people courage to fight against the forces of destruction around us. Everyone you see is someone who would be on "our" side in an instant if they understood the enormity of the stakes ... 12/
and the power of their own role in changing the future for the better. Can we have all the conversations we need, all the arguments we need, to effect that change? The denialists have gone quiet, now is our time and chance to sing the song of a better future. 13/End.
