The Paradise High School girls basketball team is about to play their first game since the Camp Fire. Every girl on the roster except one lost her home. Here they are linking hands with rival Chico High before tip-off.
If you’re in the area and want to support these kids, they’re playing at Acker Gym at Chico State right now. Girls at 530. Boys at 700. Donations at the door. Or give online here: nvcf.org/fund/butte-cou…. The high school is still standing but the elementary schools burned down.
I spent the day in Paradise—at least the part the National Guard would let me access. It doesn’t seem like a fire tore through. It looks like it was flattened by a series of bombs.
I grew up in California and wildfires are part of the deal. But this was an inferno. The bones of the homes and all their contents melted to dust. All that’s left are scattered papers and footlong scraps of metal. The town is just—-gone.
Anyway, if you have a roof over your head tonight count your blessings.
