UCANR trains Master Gardeners to be a source of fact-based advice on gardening, including food gardening, sustainable methods of landscaping & pest control for free to every Californian. This is a vital service esp to poor people who grow their groceries. #GivingTuesday
There are LOADS of worthy organizations that could use your help on #GivingTuesday or any other day of the year. I'm going to highlight a few that I feel don't get much attention, some of whom are very shy in their fundraising, like UCANR.
.@UCSouthCoastREC conserves genetic diversity for avocado, persimmons, dragonfruit & other crops. They research, do outreach to the public (tasting days!), and host a demonstration garden for drought-tolerant landscaping. #genebanks #GivingTuesday donate.ucanr.edu/pages/south-co… Photo of persimmons in a basket that have been labeled with their variety names in white paint.
As I said, there are other good causes & many probably seem more urgent. But biodiversity is *key* to our food security, especially with climate change upsetting many of the patterns we knew. #GivingTuesday donate.ucanr.edu/pages/south-co… View down a table full of Chinet plates with dragonfruits cut in half , also with a sample of their leaves.
But decades of slashed government budgets have affected the places where this germplasm is kept (USDA, land grand universities). Additionally, @UCSouthCoastREC is located somewhere developers would LOVE to get their hands on. Developers = death to agricultural space. So your donations can really make a difference to the science being done here! In the face of budget cuts, your donations help keep them productive, help them take care of the germplasm, and helps justify their need when developers try to convince others to sell the land.
@FruitRare is an educational non-profit that helps people learn how to grow fruit, helps conserve genetic diversity, teaches students the biological wonder that is grafting, and helps distribute rare scionwood. #GivingTuesday crfg.org/home/join/ Photo of a display table with pears of all kinds on it.Table with avocados of different shapes, sizes, and shades of green, each labeled with Liquid Paper.
.@FruitRare taught me most of what I know about fruit, including how to graft. Meetings are free, but running the org isn't so donations are crucial! Some CRFG chapters also offer ag/hort scholarships. crfg.org/home/join/ #GivingTuesday Several people wearing CRFG hats, volunteering at a table serving cut fruit to people.
If all were well, the germplasm conservation work of the USDA National Clonal Germplasm repositories would be well funded. But it hasn't been. Some, like Corvallis, can accept donations through 3rd party support groups. #genebanks #GivingTuesday agresearchfoundation.oregonstate.edu/friends-nation… Pear orchard with USDA-ARS sign saying Photo of a slide at a presentation saying Guerilla shelves with yellow plastic containers holding plastic micropropagation bags of plants.
Another worthy #GivingTuesday recipient is Ted Rogers, who single-handedly runs Biking in LA. This blog unites the cycling community, tabulates unfortunate statistics of cyclists killed by reckless drivers, helps elevate cyclists' issues in LA. bikinginla.com/2018/11/22/its…
