So white Canadian 30-something journalist is freaking out about used needles in their not quite gentrified quickly enough #yeg neighbourhood where they got a ridiculous deal on their house? Is that what I missed today? Well, fuck. 1/?
Welcome to our neighbourhood. I moved into Alberta Avenue in 1994. When we built a playground in St. Pat's school yard a few years later, I organized the weekly raking party where we hauled out syringes and condoms on Saturday mornings. 2/
We raised our children and built a community while the rest of the city looked down on us. We fought for funding and support and we turned it around. Immigrants, FNIM, folks like me who had no where else to go stuck it out. And we turned it around. 3/
We did that not by looking down our noses at our neighbours but by having empathy for them and helping them and lifting them up. We had block parties and block patrols but I never once heard the word "vigilante" used. 4/
I stared down a gang member with a knife one night and chased him out of our playground. It never occurred to me to round up the neighbours to "deal with him" once and for all. I threatened to kiss his ass and call his mom, IIRC. 5/
And, so, while I appreciate people who have moved into our neighbourhood in the last 3 years who think that they know how we need to deal with things, let me say this: you don't. We know we've got problems and your solution to it is misguided. 6/
Well, kiss here is obviously "kick" but, you know ...😎
Safe injection sites are not creating drug addicts; they are saving lives. Nobody wants to wake up to a used needle on their front lawn but I'm pretty sure you've got to admit that it's better than waking up to a corpse beside a needle on your front lawn. 7/
I've lived all around #yeg and I've always come back to the #AlbertaAvenue area. It's real. Sometimes it's raw. But the people who choose to stay here are salt of the earth and you won't find better anywhere. We help each other. 8/
And I invite you to join us, @TristinHopper. You're going to find an incredible community of people who thrive on making our streets safe for kids to play while taking care of those who need care. It's lovely. Welcome. end/
