I read every back-issue of the magazine the IEA sends to schools across the country, and compared every article to the recent revelations about where their money really came from. Today, they stand accused of pushing tobacco industry propaganda in schools: opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/a…
The piece continues our work on dark-money funded 'think-tanks' driving a hard Brexit. Last year, we ran this, by @guyshrubsole, showing how the Legatum Institute was getting huge access to DEFRA: opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/g… Guy's argument about the interests they represent are key.
The story focussed on one Legatum staff member - a former Washington lobbyist called Shanker Singham. Remember that name. He's an important character shaping the future of the country.
Next, Brendan Montague revealed on @opendemocracy how Shanker Singham had "argued that Brexit could break the European Union’s regulatory regime across the continent" (for regulation, read environmental, worker rights and consumer protection): opendemocracy.net/uk/brendan-mon…
Then, @peterkgeoghegan showed how Legatum was funded by 'disaster capitalist' and Dubai-based hedge fund billionaire Christopher Chandler: opendemocracy.net/uk/peter-geogh…
Next, our colleagues Jim Cusick & @CrinaBoros showed how an agrichemical company was buying positive coverage in George Osborne's Evening Standard: opendemocracy.net/james-cusick-c…

Which makes sense when you realise that the EU is (primarily?) a farming union: opendemocracy.net/uk/adam-ramsay…
Then, Shanker Singham left the Legatum Institute. Apparently they didn't like the negative press coverage: ft.com/content/091513…
But he didn't go far - he moved to the Instute for Economic Affairs, where @peterkgeoghegan and @JennaCorderoy revealed he was getting unparalleled access to government figures: opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/p…
Meanwhile, the Charity Commission found that Legatum had breached charity law in their Brexit work: opendemocracy.net/uk/peter-geogh…
And it turned out that Singham had taken a role with a commercial lobbying firm, while also having a role as an advisor to the trade secretary (and disgraced former defence secretary) Liam Fox: opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/a…
Our article forced Singham to resign as an advisor to Liam Fox. Sorry Shanker, second time we've been involved in you leaving a job... thetimes.co.uk/article/trade-…
Then, Dominic Rabb became Brexit secretary. So we revealed how his political career had been nursed at the IEA teet: opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/a…
And reading the IEA's materials (and those of their friends) led me to this worrying conclusion: opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/a…
Then we showed how a whole load of Britain's dark-money funded right-wing think tanks & campaign groups work together: opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/p…
Of course, lots of other people have done amazing work in this area - notably our friends at @UE, @guardian, @desmoguk & @Spinwatch; @carolecadwalla, @matjhope, @ByRobDavies, @CaveTamasin and many many more. We collaborate with them where we can, & are in awe of their brilliance.
ANYWAY, here's the point: if you want us to keep digging into the dark money funded 'think tank'/PR/lobbying industry nexus, please help pay for it. They rely on secret donations. We rely on you: crowdfunder.co.uk/expose-the-dar…

Thank you for allowing us to do this work.
(of course, all of this runs in parallel to our work on dark money around the Scottish Tories and the DUP, which I tweeted about yesterday )
A think tank funded by BP sent a magazine promoting climate change denial to schools across the country: opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/a…
