The serious point about #VicarGate is that Newsnight billed someone in a dog collar as a Vicar, which most people take to mean “Ordained in the Church of England” (i.e. as opposed to a Minister, Priest, etc), when in fact they were watching someone apparently self-ordained.
That this is an issue is evident from @BBCNewsnight’s own response, in which they use the term “Pastor” instead of “Vicar” which they used on the programme.
Like it or not, for a part of the population, a Vicar is still a figure of at least some authority, so the person was not actually someone with the authority that people thought they had.
This is no different from billing someone as a “Professor from Oxford”, when their title of professor cost them ten dollars on a website and they happen to live in Oxford.
Perhaps, more importantly, why is Newsnight’s reaction to be defensive, instead of just pointing out she was not hired, that they believe her views are genuinely her’s, and that they apologise for getting their description of her wrong?
