@CDCgov releases mortality rates at the end of every year. Importantly, the #suicide rate in the US last year was 47,173—up from 44,965 suicide deaths in 2016 and 44,193 in 2015. (THREAD) #SPSM
@CDCgov To some extent, this comes as no surprise: the suicide rate has been rising steadily for the past 2+ decades. We knew that. What *is* surprising is the jump in the number of suicide deaths in 2017; according to government records, this is the sharpest increase in 50 years. #SPSM
Something has to be done. The #suicide prevention field has proven itself useless (thus far). Despite our best efforts, the rates continue to rise. We have to change EVERYTHING. #SPSM
1. #Suicide is not just a problem of mental health. We have to see it as a result of life's troubles. @CDCgov reported in June that 54% of those who died by suicide between 1999-2016 DID NOT have a known mental health condition. #SPSM
Instead, stressors were substance abuse, a recent crisis, financial problems, lethal problems, relationship issues, and more. (More here: cdc.gov/vitalsigns/sui…) #SPSM @CDCgov
@CDCgov 2. Stop telling #suicidal people to reach out. Be proactive. The onus is on all of us to take care of one another. Learn the signs of suicide. Open your eyes. Talk to your friends and family. Check in often, in person and online. #SPSM
@CDCgov Learn how to diffuse a crisis. Learn why wellness checks and calling 911 on #suicidal people can be dangerous. Learn about how suicide manifests itself differently in marginalized communities and communities of color. #SPSM
@CDCgov Learn about #suicide before it affects you personally, if you have that luxury. Learn everything you can. #SPSM
@CDCgov 3. Know your resources. Save the number for the National #Suicide Prevention Lifeline (@800273TALK) in your phone. It's 1-800-273-8255. Save the number for Crisis Text Line (@crisistextline) in your phone. It's 741-741. #SPSM
If you're an ally of the LGBTQ+ community, save the numbers for Trans Lifeline (@TransLifeline) and The Trevor Project (@TrevorProject), too. #SPSM #suicide
4. Donate the resources you have to making change.
Got money? Donate it to an organization that focuses on #suicide education or research, like American Association of Suicidology (@AASuicidology). #SPSM
Donate it to small, local non-profits that do good work, like Six Feet Over (@SuckItSuicide). Donate it to art-based advocacy projects, like good ol' Live Through This (@lttphoto). #SPSM #suicide
Got time? Volunteer with one of the organizations I've already mentioned. Volunteer at a peer-based warmline if you have lived experience (warmline.org). #suicide #SPSM
Implore local mental and behavioral health professionals to get training in trauma-informed #suicide crisis techniques—and hold them accountable. Write to your representatives. Shout it from the rooftops. #SPSM
5. Try to think of #suicide as part of life, like any other death. Suicide is preventable, though. But we've got to do more than PREVENT suicide; we've got to help the people around us build lives worth living. #SPSM
This is just a disorganized rant from a #suicide education professional who's suffered a lot of losses recently, and who is deeply sad at the state of things—including the state of the prevention field, itself. #SPSM
There's more that I'm not thinking of in this moment. This is just the tiniest list of ideas for things you can do to make change in your corner of the world. /THREAD #SPSM #suicide
