I lost many friends during the #AIDS crisis.
I still miss them.
I wrote this about #AssottoSaint, who I am thinking of with love on this #WorldAIDSDay
He'd only be 61, were he still alive today.

Remembering Assotto Saint: A Fierce and Fatal Vision
"At some point I stopped going to funerals. I had become that woman, the one who keens and wails in the back of the church or synagogue or memorial hall, the one who everyone thinks might throw herself into the open pit of grave or onto the coffin or urn."
"That fight was our gay Normandy and it consumed all our time, all our conversations. Like whispered messages from a foxhole, staccato shots over the bow of life, we spoke to each other like it might be our last time."
"You see, we loved them, these men who were dying right in front of us. We loved them, we were desperate to save them and we were powerless. All we had in our AIDS-war foxholes was each other. And the bodies kept piling up around us."
In his introduction to The Road Before Us,Assotto talks about the importance of outing one’s #HIV status.“There is nothing that those of us in this predicament could reveal in our bios that is more urgent & deserving of mention than our seropositivity or diagnosis.”
Today, as I think of all these men I loved, whose work I loved, I ache with the loss of that generation.
It was a fraught time.
I wrote more about them here, these friends, as well as about my own illness.…
"When I was faced repeatedly with the deaths and dying of my gay male friends from AIDS, I was furious most of the time. We lived then with a sense of urgency, as if everything we said and did was like our lives depended on it–because it did."
"We lost a generation of artists and writers as well as just plain folks."
Today we remember them.
All of them.
