From a family of privilege, @GeorgeHWBush enlisted at 18. At just short of 19 he became a Navy pilot. At 20 he was shot down over the Pacific by a Japanese fighter. In short, like so many other millions, he exemplified the #GreatestGeneration
He loved baseball. And was good at it. Hell, he loved sports. Of all kinds. Even horseshoes.
This man from Yale grew to love @TAMU placing his library and papers there. He & Barbara could be seen all over campus & at sporting events & cheering on @AggieFootball He will rejoin his beloved Barbara at their resting place on campus in the coming days.
In 2006 I visited the Bush library with McCain & the former President gave a private tour. John & Mr. Bush came upon a photo of John's father, then a WWII submariner, with Mr. Bush taken after Bush had been rescued after being shot down. Both men were brought to tears & hugged.
Barbara just grabbed my hand and held on. #GreatestGeneration
@GeorgeHWBush was a wise man, guiding America & the world through the breakup of the Soviet Union. When he decided to liberate Kuwait from Saddam, he did so resolutely, but he knew to not get America into a quagmire in Iraq. #Wisdom #Strength
He understood compromise was part of life and leadership. And he was done in by power hungry ideologues in our party. But he defined public service as being more than just holding office. Raising hundreds of millions for charity & inspiring volunteerism.
As a kid he approved me having an important job in his presidential campaigns. And told me to report directly to Jimmy Baker. Barbara told me she would be watching :) and to know I would be reporting to her too. #Blessed
He attacked life with gusto. A tornado of action. A tornado of love for his family & his country. He loved people. Everyone was special. Not once did I hear him brag on himself or gloat. If you are seeking a role model for yourself or your children, consider this good man.
@GeorgeHWBush was a lifelong Republican. But he put country over party always. Always. His final act of putting America first was voting for @HillaryClinton over Trump in 2016.
I'm especially reflective about him today. Sad & proud. I wouldn't be the man I am without my association with him. And I can't but help contrast this good & decent man with the current "president" and it redoubles my commitment.
Fair winds and following seas @GeorgeHWBush America is indebted sir.
