I have to ask why any politician is paid for a TV news or current affairs appearance. They have a job they are paid for, want to advance and explain their policies, and want to gather electoral support. TV appearances are a way to do that, and non-compulsory.
I haven’t been paid for the odd appearance TV and radio I’ve made (except once, where it was as an expert answering factual questions), and I wouldn’t want to be.
Do I lose my paying gig if my views change? Should I be careful what I say, even if I think it’s true, in case they don’t get me on again? It’s hardly a route to honesty.
I’m not talking here about professional pundits and analysts, neutral or academic experts, and so on. Like with musicians, what they do is work and work should be paid for.
I mean politicians (and campaigners) who are on specifically to advance a policy or viewpoint. For some it’s maybe a fine line, and there might be exceptions - filming for a day or days at a time perhaps - but I’m not sure it is for politicians already paid to be politicians.
This gets me thinking about all the times me and fellow musicians (and engineers, mixers, videographers, etc.) have been told that they can’t get paid for a gig, but it’ll give them exposure. The answer that this is what we do for a living is always met with a blank stare.
Not having a go at politicians here BTW, but much more at those offering to pay them for Media appearances. Would they say no if it wasn’t offered?
