Dear Colleagues Who I Respected Until 5 Min Ago: the comments you make about women physicians, their spouses, sexual proclivities, race, religion, and offspring in “secret” Facebook groups are one screenshot away from my inbox.
They find their way to my inbox via peers who may share your political views but not your indecency.
They are shared knowing (and in some cases hoping) I may make an example of you here on my modest platform.
I don’t think I’ll do so.

But I cannot unsee it. The profanity, the horrible misogyny, the creepy Googling to find private family photos, the violation of off limits topics like one’s young children. Hateful comments made proudly and gleefully, with not a shred of humanity.
I sit on committees with you. I have circulated your science. I have seen you nominated for awards and celebrated your successes. I have bent over backwards to be objective and collaborative on discussions of inclusion, equity & respect.
Here is what I say to you:

1. Whoever you are in secret, that is who you truly are. I’m sorry that that person is a total asshat

2. I see what you have planned against women physicians, and it is interesting but honestly so stupid
3. I am sorry that the movement for equity and inclusion so angers and threatens you. But it is coming, one way or another, and I promise - it won’t be as horrible as you think.

Your colleague (but maybe don’t ask me for a letter for promotion anymore)-
