In Spring last year Alastair Sloan and Iain Campbell came to me with a short story about Arron Banks, "the man who bought Brexit". They had various documents which seemed to show some surprising things.
We worked with them over the summer, and the short story became a long one. In a way, it's still unfolding. But the bottom line is this: it looked like he couldn't afford the huge donations he funneled into the Brexit campaign. opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/a…
Specifically, after wading through court documents and accounts and talking to former staff, they found a few extraordinary details. Like this.
The piece triggered questions in parliament from @benbradshaw: opendemocracy.net/uk/mary-fitzge…
...and international news coverage, including this in the New York Times: nytimes.com/2017/10/19/wor…
Then, @lydianoon covered (on openDemocracy) the strange moment that Banks and Nigel Farage spoke at a mining conference, as those impacted by the industry protested outside: opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/l…
Which all made more sense when @peterkgeoghegan, @marcusleroux, @LeighBa1 & Lesotho-based Billy Ntaote broke this weird story: opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/l…
Not only did it turn out that Banks's diamond mines weren't worth much, but his political consultancy was paying a Lesotho politician. It's meant to be the other way around!
Then, @marcusleroux & @LeighBa1 got their teeth deeper into Banks's finances. And it looks like a lot of it rests on the identity of a hidden shareholder of a company in the Isle of Man: opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/m…
And that connects back to a man named Alan Kentish. Here are some things you should know about him.
We also don't really know how these millions were spent. Every pound in the last ten weeks of the campaign has to be accounted for. But it appears Banks's campaigns spent millions before that period, avoiding spending limits & scrutiny. opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/a…
Eventually, on the back of our work & others, the Electoral Commission found that Banks's campaign had broken the law, and referred the case to the Met police.
But, months later, we revealed the Met still hadn't opened an investigation, citing "political sensitivities": opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/j…
After that story blew up, the Met told the Mayor of London that they hadn't "received" key evidence from the Electoral Commission. We revealed that that was... a stretch of the English language... opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/j…
And finally, the National Crime Agency announced that they were investigating Banks: theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/n…
Then, working with some sources, @peterkgeoghegan @jennacorderoy revealed that Arron Banks had used his insurance company data & staff in the campaign – despite telling parliament he hadn't: opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/p…
And we also revealed how the man who introduced Banks to Nigel Farage (and who was LeaveEU's "ambassador") made his millions in Russia: opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/h…
Then, we published explosive emails which showed that Arron Banks asking Steve Bannon - the Trump advisor/former Cambridge Analytica VP/Breitbart founder - for help fundraising: opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/p…
And, finally, Theresa May was accused of a "major cover-up" after the Home Office refused our freedom of information requests about the Banks inquiry: opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/p…
All of this is only possible because of your support. So, please do contribute to our fundraising appeal, and help us keep investigating the dark money driving Brexit: crowdfunder.co.uk/expose-the-dar…
