had a friend get on the phone with a Big Co recruiter about an engineering position, but as soon as the recruiter learned she had customer experience they immediately switched to talking support roles

stop making "good communication skills" a liability for eng hiring!
this friend is an engineer with relevant industry experience who can also string two sentences together and they wanted to shunt her off the engineering path for it
I've had this happen, too!

years of engineering experience, but "gosh you're so organized, why don't you try a project manager role?" fuuuuuck you!
engineers SHOULD have good communication skills! engineers SHOULD be organized!

you're doing a disservice to your company by expecting engineering candidates NOT to have these skills
and, yeah, through cultural and social pressures, women tend to have better communication skills

which means they are also more likely to be shunted into support and PM roles when they wanted engineering ones
so, you're a woman in engineering and you receive signals Every Day that you shouldn't be here

but then, a Big Co wants to talk to you! about engineering!

just kidding, can you be in support? you're so good with words!

talk about a fucking gut punch
that is HARD to come back from, especially mid-interview!

maybe you shouldn't be an engineer. maybe you should take this support role. maybe that's the best you can be.
I started in support. I have a marketing background. Those roles are HARD and I am not trying to smear them.

But they are also devalued in the tech industry and when a recruiter tries to send you there off an engineering position, that is a signal.
my friend hung up on that recruiter because she is a hero

but also because she has years of dealing with bullshit like this and she knows when she's being taken for granted

we cannot, and should not, expect the same for less-experienced workers
my friend's takeaway was that she has to stop being so nice when talking about tech, because people don't respect you

what a sad and also accurate lesson
