Yesterday, @jkenney told reporters, "I can tell you in 2003, and '04 and '05 you can look at the Hansard transcript and see me supporting domestic partner arrangements for dependent couples regardless of sexual orientation." That was a lie. #ableg #cdnpoli
In January, 2005, in a discussion with Punjabi language media, Jason Kenney Conservative Deputy House Leader at the time) stated, "Marriage is open to everybody, as long as they're a man and a woman."
In Sept/03, as 300 of his followers prayed outside his office, Kenney said marriage should be limited to heterosexual couples & marriage redefinition is not an issue for the courts. "We aren't going to let the courts impose their morality on our society," he said.
In March, 2010, Minister of Citizenship & Immigration Jason Kenney ordered his staff to remove every single reference to LGTBQ2S+ rights in Canada's Citizenship Guide. His staff objected; Kenney ruled and references were removed. #ableg #cdnpoli
"It is completely inconsistent for secular liberals to argue traditional conceptions of the family have no place in society when it comes to homosexual marriage, but then object to polygamy, using traditional arguments." Jason Kenney in November, 2002.
Jason Kenney in that same Nov/02 interview: "When the Supreme Court invented a constitutional right to sexual orientation, a right based on sexual conduct, they opened the door for polygamists, advocates of incest and others to claim the same status as homosexuals."
In March/03, Jason Kenney was outraged that the SCC overturned the Surrey School Board's decision to keep gay friendly books out of classrooms. "Every conservative lawyer I talked to told me there was no way the court would overturn the board's decision," he said.
July/03 Pope calls on Catholic politicians to vote against SSM.
JK's response: "Politicians who come from the Catholic tradition whose convictions are formed in part by their faith, this should be nothing new to them and they should already have taken that into consideration."
June 8/99 Kenney voted yes: "Marriage is & should remain the union of 1 man & 1 woman to the exclusion of all others, and that Parliament will take all necessary steps within the jurisdiction of the Parliament of Canada to preserve this definition of marriage in Canada."
That '99 motion passed but a similar one in 2003 failed. Jason spoke & voted for it, though. ""Regarding sexual orientation or, more accurately, what we are really talking about, sexual behaviour, the argument has been made ... that this is analogous to race and ethnicity".../
(For) anyone in the Liberal party to equate the traditional definition of marriage with segregation and apartheid is vile and disgusting ..." That's right. Jason felt that suggesting LGTBQ rights should be protected rights was vile and disgusting.
From Hansard, as reported in The Vancouver Sun Sept 17/03: "Marriage is by nature heterosexual. Marriage has from time immemorial been firmly grounded in our legal tradition, one that is itself a reflection of longstanding philosophical and religious traditions." - Jason Kenney
In September, 2004, Kenney took a break from railing against SSM to speak at an anti abortion rally where he suggested that if a politician who opposes abortion refuses to lobby against it, that's the same as failing to fight child abuse or slavery. Yes, he actually did say that.
Feb 20/05, Kenney appeared on CTV's Question Period to debate NDP MP Bill Siksay about SSM. Here's a snippet from the transcript of that exchange. I cannot find where he supports domestic partner arrangements for gay dependent couples in here.
May 29/05: Kenney spoke at a rally opposing SSM telling attendees "I can't understand why the Liberals are so obsessed with changing the meaning of marriage." & urging them to defeat their MP because he supported it.
June/05 Kenney basically says "Tough shit!" when a Liberal MP has his domain name taken by anti-SSM activists. So Rick Mercer registers and has it re-direct to the Marxist Leninist Party of Canada. website THAT was pretty funny!
I have NO IDEA how that video got attached to that last tweet but, //shrugs
Oh, I get it. SOMEONE ELSE has registered that domain name now and has it redirected to the video. Haha! Guess 2018 Kenney should have taken 2005 Kenney's advice and registered all those domains, eh? Haha! //back to the past
On June 28, 2005, 3rd & Final Vote on the Civil Marriage Act: Jason Kenney voted "No". The bill passed 158 - 133 (4 paired)
I searched through the rest of 2005 and could find no evidence to support Kenney's claims that he made yesterday but he did manage to mention the Nazis (and also forget what century he was in) when speaking to a Medical Assistance in Dying bill. /fin
