A thread on why the crisis in #Togo is escalating
- Last year the people started protesting to demand the reinstatement of a constitution that encompassed terms limit which was voted by 97% during a referendum in 1992 but Eyadema changed in 2002 #Togodebout #Fauremustgo
- The government has to either reinstate terms limit of the president @FEGnassingbe who is serving a third term and this thanks to vote rigging and the massacre of over 500Togolese civilians when he seized power following the death of his father in 2005 #Togodebout #Fauremustgo
- The regime then rushed to pass a new constitution which included terms limit but included a new article stating that the terms limits do not affect the current of past terms of the president. Meaning he gets two more terms plus the 3 he sever starting 2020. #Fauremustgo
- That constitution was rejected by the opposition and since the regime didn’t get the 2/3 of votes required to modify the constitution, it decided to submit that constitution to a referendum #Togodebout #Fauremustgo
- The people rejected the referendum because the options are : a- Vote Yes and dictature @FEGnassingbe can run till 2030 or b- Vote No and you have no terms limit at all and he can run for life. This Hinson choice is not an option for us. #Togodebout #Fauremustgo
- The ECOWAS stepped in and appointed @NAkufoAddo and @AlphaCondePRG who volunteered as mediators of a dialogue between opposition and the government . After 6 months of a dialogue the ECOWAS came with a roadmap for #Togo #Togodebout #Fauremustgo
- In the roadmap the @ecowas_cedeao suggested that parliament elections be held before end of Dec 2018 as the term of the current parliament ended in June18. They suggested that the electoral commission and constitutional court be reformed #Togodebout #Fauremustgo
- The regime first refused to reconstitute the Electoral Comission and launched a unilateral voter registration process which the opposition boycotted by asking people to not register and partake in these elections which they want to win to pass their constitution #Togoddebout
- Following pressure from the @ecowas_cedeao The regime eventually agreed to let opposition members in the electoral commission but still refused to constitute the constitutional court whose members they appointed. They also refused to reopen the voter registration #Togodebout
- The regime announced December 16th as elections and 20th as referendum without consulting the opposition knowing that over 80% of citizens are not registered to vote due to the registration boycott which took place in September and October #Fauremustgo #Togodebout
- The opposition called for the postponement of the parliamentary elections, the recomposition of the constitutional court and the reopening of voters registration to allow free and fair elections. The regime rejected it so they called for protests to resume #Fauremustgo
- The opposition called for protests all over the country till the regime drops its plans to hold elections that only they will participate in . The regime banned the protests and minister of security promised to crush it mercilessly if they dare #Togodebout #Fauremustgo
