1/ TIL two things:
1. I can still read French well enough to understand a leftist French journal
2. The #GiletsJaunes protests, as I predicted, are making the French left quite uneasy.
2/ I have quite an amusing set of skeletons in my closet. One of them was being involved in the hard left when I was in college. I used to read journals like this: lutte-ouvriere.org/communiques/mo…
3/ I said previously that for all the left has been dying for a new mass mobilization, the irony is they are now on the wrong side of things.
4/ Take a look at that previous article. The best they could say in support of the protesters was the cops were "too cruel." That's not a legitimate political perspective.
5/ Contrast that with the #MAGA perspective - that when people actually challenge the ruling class program, that's when the real repression comes out. This is the perspective a healthy left should be taking.
6/ You have to understand that in French politics, the socialist and even communist parties are mainstream. @LutteOuvriere is really off to the left.
7/ I thought they would still have this perspective but alas they do not. Just look at this milquetoast article: just "workers suffering, need a strike" lutte-ouvriere.org/breves/manifes…
8/ what we saw under Obama was the worldwide marriage of the left with the halls of power. So when they do things workers don't like, it causes some ... problems.
9/ one is the failure to at least acknowledge the demands of #GiletsJaunes - let alone address them. It's been the #MAGA people pushing on this front the most.
10/ the biggest demand we heard was an end to draconian fuel taxes. But #MAGA knew these protests went deeper than that. A demand for Trump meant they were also fed up with EU immigration policies - or lack thereof.
11/ fuel taxes and immigration - two issues that make the established left uncomfortable, and why they will never address it. Fuel taxes are the most regressive taxes. Open borders immigration policies are a direct attack on wages.
12/ There. Was that so difficult? Acknowledging these demands will get you smeared, likely banned from the internet, and yet that's what makes you a revolutionary.
13/ so congratulations, #MAGA folks - by allying with the #GiletsJaunes you have regained America's revolutionary heritage, found our brothers in struggle, and left the leftists in the dungheap of history.
14/ I'll leave you with some parting words:
To arms, citizens!
Form your battalions,
March, march
Let impure blood
Water our furrows!
