Americans' views on abortion seem a bit weird and contradictory--we want first trimester abortions legal but not late-term abortions, we don't want abortion subsidized with tax dollars but also don't want tax dollars cut off from the biggest abortion biz in the country, etc...
But this position isn't as contradictory as it seems. Or rather, it may be logically contradictory but it's not emotionally contradictory. To understand why we're all over the place on this issue, it helps to look at it from an emotional standpoint.
Despite the uneven polls, I think most Americans have the same view on abortion--namely, that we don't want to deal with what it really is. And we tend to oppose anything that makes us look closely at the issue.
We don't want to deal with the idea that a glob of fetal cells is as human as we are and therefore worthy of making us change our lives. So we favor legalized first trimester abortions.
The more developed a fetus is, however, the harder it is to dehumanize him. So we oppose late-term abortion in order to make a distinction between the "bad" kind of abortion and the "fine" kind, which allows us to ignore that each kind ends with a dead child.
We oppose taxpayer-funded abortions because if we don't force pro-life people to pay for abortions, maybe they won't talk about it so much and we won't have to wonder if they're right about abortion's evil.
But we also oppose defunding Planned Parenthood because doing so implies that performing over 300,000 abortions per year is deeply immoral, even if it is legal. And we don't want to consider if that's true.
In other words, we don't see the $500 million per year we give to PP as a subsidy of the abortion industry. We see it as a tax that gives us a clean conscience about abortion, a tax we'd prefer to keep paying.
So "I oppose abortion except in cases of rape and incest," "legal, safe, and rare" and "shout your abortion" aren't different policy positions. They're different manifestations of the desire to avoid dealing with what abortion is.
The answer, as in all things, is Jesus. When we believe that Jesus has truly erased even the most horrific of our sins, we are then free to look at that powerless horror and see it for what it is.
Through the blood of Jesus, we are free to repent of destroying the unborn, free to turn from our indifference towards them, and free to love them as Christ first loved us. May God grant us this love today.
