you know how ableist people get so super outraged at disabled people when we say that every newly built building should be wheelchair accessible? "are you saying every house must be single storey or have an elevator???"

which we should & could have been doing for decades?
and they act like that's totally unreasonable?

because they're only thinking about elevators that are set into an elevator shaft?

when the truth is, platform lifts are affordable, can be mounted to stairs in many cases, and really don't take that much space?
I mean seriously. are you actually saying that designing new houses to comfortably accommodate a vertical platform lift,

and pushing owners of older houses to install platform lifts over stairways,

that that's unreasonable and not feasible? come on.
vertical ones are always preferable because stairway mounted lifts can only carry small loads, so someone with a heavy powerchair still wouldn't be able to use them.

but it's still a pretty good solution for retrofits.
you wouldn't even have to mandate every house to actually HAVE one of these lifts. just requiring them to leave room, leave the 3 or so square meters next to the stairway into which a platform lift could be installed when it is needed would be SO FUCKING USEFUL.
imagine your regular middle class family that suddenly finds themselves with a disabled child, or a disabled grandma.

instead of frantically searching for an accessible house, or bringing the disabled person into an institution, they can just install a lift. cause it's standard.
imagine how many more houses, even rental properties, would get those over time if they were always easy to install with no major changes.

imagine how many people would live in homes with a lift they don't need... and then would not have to move when they start needing it
imagine a world where becoming disabled wouldn't mean that you need to uproot your life, and move straight across the country because there's 3 accessible apartments per city & you can't get into one.
and it would be so. fucking. easy. to achieve.
Also, there is absolutely no reason for those lifts to look that ugly. if they were manufactured & bought in greater quantities, they could easily come in different colours & styles and with fancy decorations.
or, you know. when we finally kill capitalism we can make them pretty too.
yes, platform lifts are slow. so if your house has 3 storeys, that's gonna be a lot of waiting.

but you know what's worse than needing 10 minutes to reach the ground floor?

not being able to get there AT ALL.
and any apartment building with more storeys or lots of apartments should have a "proper" elevator anyway, like sheesh it's not too much to ask, if you're gonna make money off other people's need to not be homeless you can at least make sure they can get in & out on their own
