On Dec 12 there were 505 #Ebola cases reported in #DRCongo -- 2 dys later it's 521, w/>30 cases in the large city of Butembo. "Control" seems elusive.
Here are some reasons for rising concern (see my thread):
National elections are days away (Dec 23) & violence is rising. 2 dys ago someone set fire to the election warehouse, destroying 1000s of voting machines in Kinshasa.
One of the est'ed 60 militias operating in the #Ebola area of No Kivu is the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR). Shots were fired X-border in #Rwanda, killing 2 Rwandan soldiers on Dec 9. Escalated border tension, Hutu v Tutsi. MORE…
According to new @UNHCR rpt, at least 1.5M people have lost their homes this year in #DRCongo due to ongoing fighting/war -- most of them, in the North Kivu region where #Ebola is spreading. MORE…
The @UN warns that violent outbreaks are occurring all over #DRCongo in the lead-up to the Dec. 23 election. Few Congolese believe the election will be "free and fair," or even safe. MORE…
"The US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, recently warned DR Congo against using electronic voting machines at a Security Council Meeting - and to stick with the "trusted, tested, transparent, and easy-to-use voting method" of paper ballots." MORE…
Dictator #JosephKabila resisted stepping down & then hand-picked successor Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, who is expected to "win." The EU on Dec 11 issued travel & banking sanctions against Shadary & 13 other top leaders, expecting election fraud. MORE…
This: "But the reality is that this election, which has been postponed many times, is the result of the enormous sacrifices made by young, often anonymous Congolese activists who have spent the past few yrs campaigning for political change."
One of the Kivu area militias is the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). Last month the ADF killed 7 @UNPeacekeeping soldiers outside Beni, a focal point of the #Ebola outbreak. MORE…
On Dec 11 ten more dead bodies were found in Oicha, in North Kivu province -- apparent ADF victims, just outside the current "Ebola zone".
And #Kabila & his cronies are corrupt. "#TransparencyInternational ranks #Congo 161st out of 180 in its 2017 Corruption Perceptions Index..>$750 million in mining revenues never made it into state coffers between 2013 and 2015 alone." MORE…
"Some observers argue that the current system will allow #Kabila to install #Shadary for one term before returning to the presidency for a permitted third term."…
So, pray for the safety of all #Ebola - fighters amid surely-rising tensions in #DRCongo .
