The phrase "No taxation without representation" became a rallying cry for the American colonies in the years leading up to the Revolutionary War. It encapsulated the colonists' growing frustration with British rule, particularly over the issue of taxes imposed by a distant Parliament in which they had no elected representatives.
The trouble began in earnest after the French and Indian War (1754–1763), which left Britain with a massive war debt. To offset this, the British government decided to tax the American colonies more heavily, arguing that the war had been fought partly to protect them. In 1765, Parliament passed the Stamp Act, a tax on legal documents, licenses, newspapers, and even playing cards and dice. Unlike previous taxes, which were tied to trade and often indirect, the Stamp Act was a direct tax on the colonists, and it required them to pay in British currency rather than colonial money.
